More cyclists die

I have just heard the sad news that in my local town of Oliva today, a drunken and drugged woman ploughed into some cyclists and killed one of them.  This on a road that I frequently cycle along.  Thank goodness I wasn't there today, my condolences to the cyclist's family.  I really can't say how horrified I am about this incident.

Just found this report, it seems that two cyclists were killed, and several injured.

That's awful news Kathy.  It's truly shocking to hear that someone can have such a callous disregard for everyday life.  Condolences

A third cyclist has now died as a result of this incident.  And the driver already had a conviction for drug trafficking and drink driving.

Sorry to use this thread, but I guess it's a good as anywhere, as it sure is local.

Becky's mum, yesterday:-

Taken out on a roundabout by a driver coming off a dual carriageway.
At least she's had a number of nice messages from celebrity cyclists and wot not.

FFS Huw ... I'm sorry to read that.  Pleased that it isn't more serious - not that it isn't serious enough. Sad

I hear Nicky Hayden is in an extremely critical condition after suffering serious cerebral damage in a cycling accident earlier in the week.

Me too. Could easily have been far worse. A split second later...

It's made the BBC news too.

Also, some bloke who was riding the Giro has been in touch. Wink

Sorry to hear that Mrs J got taken out but glad it wasn't more serious. Hope she's back on her bike soon!

Sorry to hear about Becky's mum

Hope Becky's mum recovers well and quickly.

It's a pretty fragile business on a bike these days, and only a few weeks ago a cyclist was killed at the top of my road.  I'm on the bike every single day and I see and experience some pretty scary stuff.  What concerns me most is the creeping, insidious media view of cyclists as some kind of inconvenience that take up the roads that rightfully, and only belong to motorists.  Today we heard a national talk radio host warning any cyclists that touched his car with 'a serious crash'.  There is some worrying reporting out there...

Sadly, there are many more examples just like those

Hope there isn't the same attitudes in the UK and elsewhere...

yes, i've gotten the same impression.

then you have the garda conference calling for it to be mandatory for cyclists to wear hi vis jackets and helmets because

you see people stepping out, trucks taking corners short,

but how many accidents of ttrucks taking corners short or people stepping out would cyclists wearing high vis jackets and helmets stop?

i've had a couple close calls the last couple weeks and it is taking a knock on my nerves from vehicle speeding up to pass me at top of a hill when i could see a vehicle near the top in the other direction. just putting all 3 of us (or more at risk). if that vehicle was 3 seconds nearer, i dread to think

or on another cycle when a truck in the opposite directions veers over the middle of the line, this scared me alot forcing me onto the side of the road. i had to stop to recompose myself.

or last sunday, a vehicle passing me on a  blind corner to save themselves 7 seconds as they pull in on the next laneway on the road just around the corner

or another vehicle on last sunday swerving into me when overtaking me on a downhill forcing me onto the grass. i'm not sure how i didn't crash. no idea. after being extremely nearly bitten by a big dog on that ride who also made me nearly crash (maybe the hi-vis and helmet i was wearing worked?), i just felt terrible and wanted to get home.

I felt compelled to post this here as it actually happened on my road!  Scroll down the page for the video clip and to note the five cars parked in the bicycle lane...

Meanwhile, Tuesday and Wednesday witnessed the deaths of the ninth and tenth cyclists to be killed on Irish roads this year, equalling the 2016 total before May was out.  It is starting to feel like a pogrom...
