Monte Paschi Strade Bianche, March 8th

The Strade Bianche takes place on Saturday, 8th March.

I have posted an FP thread with the details.
HuwB

This year sees a longer route, but with less sterrato.
If they are planning to climb the UCI ladder, I would have thought
more sterrato the way to go.

Plenty of live coverage options around Europe.

Really looking forward to this weekend with the Roma Maxima being on Sunday. That was enjoyable last year. I hadn't realised there was a new start in San Gimignano until this morning. RCS going for pretty tourist destination bookends.

As I suspected. New coverage times for Rai Sport 2:

13:45 (12-45 UK)Ciclismo: Strade Bianche-15:45

Which means Eurosport's coverage will miss a big chunk at the start and finish early!

Just been checking out my EPG to see if I had a HD option and I noticed that. I also noted that on RAIS2 the coverage is perhaps broken into two chunks as I have a follow on program from 15:25 to 17:15 (even though the first chunk is supposedly 13:45 to 15:45), so setting a recording manually may be advisable?

Racebook predicts finish at 15:30 with +/- 15 minute spread.
Biosphere

Just over 60km to go. Quartet of Italians riding for wild cards have about 3:30 over peloton.
gerry12ie

Well OPQS have decided that Classics Plan A isn't broken yet, so no need to change it... Smile
gerry12ie

Kwiatowski gives Sagan 'the look'? Shocked
Fontfroide

Nice attack by Sagan though.  Allez.
Boogerd and I are looking good.

Gerry too of course.
Biosphere

Didn't expect them to be given 30" so quickly, but nobody willing to chase for now.
HuwB

As a race, it's over.
gerry12ie

Even taking the escalator up to the finish they wouldn't get these two back...

You don't think Sagan might get ambushed by Kwiatkowski?
Fontfroide

My commentators think Kwiatowski is in the best shape and will win.  Naturally I don't know, but hope for Sagan.
HuwB

Kwiatkowski applies the big hammer, just as Sagan hits the wall.
Only one outcome.
(2 edits for rotten spelling)
gerry12ie

Kwiatowski had that in the bag and I think both of them knew it...
Fontfroide

Nice endgame, no surprising, but slightly dramatic when Kwiatowski attacked.

These young riders are good see, emerging, succeeding.  Love it.

Missed this.
No.
I thought Sagan would have to ambush mini Michal, before the final ramp.
Looked about 4 feet tall when interviewed by Dan Lloyd.
gerry12ie

Sagan burst on the scene with such a bang a couple of years ago, that he looked like he could do anything.  He still might, but his fellow junior has played a longer game and looks like the proper finished article.  Kwiatkowski is going to have a big year...
Fontfroide

Four feet tall.  That must make him about the most powerful rider centimetre for centimetre, in the peloton.

1.76, one centimetre taller than Cav.  Weights 68 kg.
kathy

Nice win by Kwiatkowski!

Annoyed that RAIS2 went straight to Sochi so saw none of the post mortem.

Wasn't sure how to interpret the it's over comment. Cheers. It was setup nicely with the elite group of 25 or so, but they let it get away from them. Not to detract anything from Kwiatkowski though. Impressive win. Now to carry on with the Italian theme for the weekend.
HuwB

No indeed, not to detract anything from Kwiatkowski.
A fine ride from a top racer, who has already showed this year, that last year's meteoric success was no flash in the pan.

As a race as a whole, it was nowhere near as good as last year, which was a real cat and mouse affair; the old attacking chess on wheels.
This was far more one dimensional.
I don't think the removal of half of the final sterrato stretches helped any.
Bartali

Missed it but pleased to see Cunago towards the front Smile

Missed it... was on the bike Wink

but caught last 4km to see "the move".. if you ask me Sagan gave up quite easily there.. I think he's mentally a bit worn down by what happened at Flanders last year, and is not risking going too much into the red in Feb/Mar when his big couple of weeks are still 40-45 days away.

Not to detract from Kwiatowski's win.. that was a fantastic final dig on the steep bit and deserved the win - clearly the strongest (or most committed).

I take qute a lot of consolation from this:
http://youtu.be/3ye_DMthoJY
which shows more or less, he's where he needs to be... for few weeks time.

(the alternative explanation for his lack of kick - is that he's underprepared - which could still be true - he's moved to Monaco and is living there with his girlfriend. I can imagine its not the most ideal scenario for keeping his shape/form thru winter)

Roma Maxima now live on both Rai and Eurosport 2.
Rai at 65kms to go, ES at 70kms.

Cheers.

It is the equivalent of Carnivale here this weekend and our street is on the route  of the parade which is just starting now, so off out for a look and will catch up later.
HuwB

Movistar have had their full train on the front, chasing the break.
Valverde and the Quintana Gang must be up for it.
gerry12ie

Ag2r looking to replicate last year with Gasteur.  Doomed, but I said that last year...
gerry12ie

Piti and little dinchy Domenico have broken them up nicely but Movistar hold all the aces
HuwB

Another very good race-two for two.
gerry12ie

Don Alejandro must really fancy the idea of wearing laurels at the Colosseum
gerry12ie

Unlike yesterday this really is a foregone conclusion!
HuwB

Valverde has this in the bag, with Ag2r disrupting the chase.
Must be happy with a guaranteed second, over Nocentini's chance
from a small group sprint.

Except the whole peloton are now in their rear view mirror. Wink
gerry12ie

Wow!  It's not just absence of radios that make this a good race, the lack of any coverage of the peloton in the last 10k made that super exciting.  Imagine if Kirby had been on duty? Very Happy
HuwB

That was some finish.
Ag2r must be sick as parrots.
Pozzovivo seen to sell his assistance to Valverde because he knew he stood no chance and it ends up costing his team the win.
mazda

Sure I saw Valverde exerting himself in the Strade Bianche.
Yet there he is a day later cruising to a win in the Roma Maxima.

Clearly the former needs to be on a harder course  Laughing
