I'll be watching a lot of races on record for a while, I think.
This one being no exception, so I won't be around to chat.
Carry on regardless.

Chris Froome DNS. Mild chest infection. Hoping for Romandie, but otherwise....
Fontfroide

Bad back, chest infection…. does not sound like the health of a champion.  What is going on?  More than meets the eye maybe.  Although I saw some horrible pictures of his legs the other day.  They said "ripped" on the post, but seemed to me to be the legs of a very a-normal guy.  Serious veins to study.
HuwB

Slow, slow......slow, slow, slow.
I reckon late running Turkey is going to take a half hours bite out of Eurosport's LBL coverage.

Carlos Betancur also a LBL DNS.
HuwB

Sporza and Rai Sport 2 have been live for the past 15 minutes.
161kms to go. Break over a quarter of an hour up the road.
Biosphere

RAIS 2 live with retrospective footage Wink

Cheers for Turkey heads up. Have found it on German ES2.

Late Turkey cooks Eurosport's Belgian goose...

At least its not snooker
gerry12ie

Garmin starting to animate things now - JVDB hanging off the back and the WC down in a crash.  Eurosport missed a full hour - of not much...
Nolte

scleck, rodriguez and faria da costa all retire
kathy

Break being caught pretty quickly now
Biosphere

So Saxo are riding for Kreuziger ( or a well rested Rogers Wink), but why are Europcar bothering? If Voeckler does anything, it's not going to be courtesy of a train so why save the legs of their opponent's teams?
Fontfroide

Looks like I didn't miss much.  Allez les gars.
Fontfroide

One begins to guess that the universal strategy of every team is to hangout in the peloton, get some other guys to ride in front and charge up the last hill.  Duh.

So I change my pick to Gerrans  Laughing
Bartali

Go NIBS!!!
Fontfroide

Now the racing starts.  Glad to see Arredondo in front, people have been talking about him.  Allez les jeunes, even though I know the big hitters will catch them.
HuwB

I'm at 122kms to go! Embarassed
Biosphere

Martin plays possum well.
Fontfroide

Shit.
gerry12ie

Nooooo
Bartali

Well who would have thought it?  Is that two monuments??

I'd fast forward.
Bartali

Yeah .... fast fwd to the last 5km .... you won't miss anything!!
gerry12ie

I think Martin would have got it - but two monuments for Gerrans indeed.  Poor edition - a kind of MSR without the sprinters.  That's the biggest final bunch in a few years...
Fontfroide

Kind of dull, a not very vintage set of hilly classics.

Still, I almost picked the winner, which would have been a classics double.
Biosphere

They were closing quickly so hard to call, but a crappy way for his race to end. Gerrans has got quite a bit of a poacher about him, but he's obviously got the legs too. Of to France 2 for the rugby.
Fontfroide

And Gerrans had to avoid Martin in the last corner, could have come a cropper.  Pity, it is like an archetypical bad orgasm, all in a rush at the end, whereas we might have a bit of foreplay to make it interesting for all of us.  Sprint finishes are fine, and can be exciting, and it was a bit exciting, and the right guy won and all.  But…

Oh yeah, another example of some wishy washy uncertain guy (me) changing his mind.  Still, I can live with it.

Amen to that Shocked
mr shifter

Well come on you lot.

Team Orica were seen on the front several times in the last 30 Km's.
I bet, like me you said "what the hell do they think they are doing as this classic has a sting in the tail".
Well they obviously did know what they were doing.
Their man could out sprint Valverde and we havn't seen that before. ???? (or have we)
Fontfroide

I thought Gerrans could sprint and climb a hill after a long race.  I won't try to remember where I got that impression from, as I get bad memories as well as good.  I think the strong guys were there at the end, just there was not a lot until the end.

OK, I admit some teams did more than others to bring back the break, but it was never in doubt, was it?

As for Gerry and Bio, perhaps you are right.  I thought it was a superb image at the time.  My tastelessness coming over, as usual.

I actually wasted hours watching all of that tactical turd, waiting for something to happen.
It did, when Dan Martin sadly lost his rear end and defence of his title.
Biosphere

FF, well I understood the metaphor, I didn't think it was tasteless and I thought my winky (no pun intended) made clear where I was coming (again no pun intended) from. Type away. I would rather we see real people on here than holding back out of some notions of politeness Smile

Mr S. I think most would have acknowledged Gerrans as a reasonable contender for the win, but I don't think many would have put him as the favourite.

Having had time to watch replays, I've concluded Martin was not going to make it in the end, but a shitty ending for him nevertheless.
Fontfroide

Merci Bio.  I shall carry on occasionally being a little bit like myself, which I will admit is sometimes a little bit on another planet.  I did get that you were not seriously disgusted, I guess I knew that beforehand.  I think I almost "know" some people on this forum, even if I have never met them and probably never will.

As for Gerrans, I never thought he was a favourite, clearly Gilbert and Valverde were nearly everyone's two favourites.  But he did make the second rank of favourites for some commentators.  Not unreasonably really, he does well in long races with a hill at the end, a pretty fast guy for a non-sprinter.   But I saw him in the last couple races here and there.  Third in Amstel.  Seemed to be riding well.  Seemed a good outsider favourite.
