Let the fun commence - TdF gossip

First off, Bordry has come out and basically accused the UCI of being soft on certain riders in terms of drug testing. I wonder who that could possibly be?  Wink

Saiz says it's obvious that Bruyneel wants Armstrong to win - after all, an American celebrity winner will be worth much more to a new Bruyneel led team than some Spanish kid whose won all 3 GTs by the age of 26  Wink

Finally, Simon Barnes in the Times says the only great comeback was Ali and that Armstrong is full of shit (well, he doesn't quite say that but he's not exactly complimentary)
MAILLOT JAUNE

How's the weather bg? It was nice here this morning but we had heavy showers and thunder early in evening but fortunately it's cleared up.
Bartali

I thought Slapshot was the weather guy?
MAILLOT JAUNE

Sorry Bartali, didn't mean to steal someone's forum role. Weather reports over to you SS.

Have you seen the price of butter recently?
Slapshot 3

Feel free to carry on MJ, I'm at work and still can't be arsed with it......
MAILLOT JAUNE

My sympathies with you being at work at this time of night - I used to work shifts and I did love night shifts, but I think after 4 years it took it's toll on me.

How come you've got Toronto Maple Leafs as your avitar? I'm not really up with what teams are what, but one of my most prized pocessions (sp?) when I was younger was my Toronto Blue Jays baseball cap.

Been doing shift for 25 years now, can't handle not doing them, had time away doing research / military deployments that sort of thing but even then some shift work involved.

The Avitar - Toronto Maple Leafs are my favourite ice hockey team. I'm very involved in Ice Hockey in the UK, playing for years, coaching. The Leafs were the first NHL team I ever saw during play - offs in the early 70's on World Of Sport, same place as I learned about Le Tour and cycling in general.

The forecast is..........dull and damp. How apt.
Watched the Dutch evening show, as I do most nights. Marc Smeets guest star? Jo Bruyneel.
Anyhow, back to the weather, they do these shows mostly outside. It pissed down, caused a break in the show, the lights went out on the Hog and they ended up, drinking their glass of vin rouge and saying nighty night in a chicken shed! Laughing
At one point, when discussing the "situation", Jo Fats used the word "conflict", but rapidly said "no, that's not the right word".
Gosh, you'd think I spoke Dutch. (well I do, but only the double version)

Has he not heard of Greg LeMond?

Seb Coe's comeback from Toxoplasmosis was pretty special as well. From 8 minute miling with the juniors in January 1984 to OG 1500m champ in August. (And I say that having disliked Coe to the same extent like you dislike Armstrong, although I was in my teens at the time!)

Have you got a link for the Barnes article? I can't find it. (I'm sure the article to which you refer is real. I genuinely can't find it. Smile)

My cycling mate used to call me Maillot Jaune when we were out riding and I thought it was as good an avatar as you could get. Plus, it's easy for me to remember.

Back later - I'm off to stand in the rain and watch some attacking French cyclists   Very Happy
MAILLOT JAUNE

Have fun and stay dry hommedesbois.

Happy Bastille Day to all our French posters.
Hommedesbois

I found myself next to a group of French teenagers, 15 or 16 year olds. The mouthiest one (with the prettiest girl) picked his nose, urinated blatantly in public, smoked and drank Kronenbourg as did his girl. Another girl spat profusely (I was joking about gobbing on LA!)...it was almost like being in England!

A shit-load of cars came past, PMU with Mercedes 4X4s!! Loads of Skodas with blacked-out windows! McTwat etc. 4 uncommitted escapees followed by an uncommitted péloton.

The most depressing tour stage of the quite a few I have 'seen'!   The caravane is probably better but I arrived too late!

Hi there,

Well with the snail pace yesterday, you had a better chance to identify the riders. Wink

Me dad says the caravane is the life of the Tour!  Laughing French Saucisson's great, he'd say. You never get good things free in Blighty!  Will you make it to Ventoux then? That is a stage I'd like to see this year before they close the doors. Bet so does everyone,. It will be crowded, so don't be late Hommedesbois. Smile

Cheers!
Kit

I think Ventoux's going to be in the race for years to come - it's Puy de Dome that will no longer be usable Sad

Mrs John Murphy

Astana made the blood testers wait an hour before stage 8. Bodry has complained, Pat McQuaid has checked out his bank balance and decided that no action should be taken.
SlowRower

Freyssinet and Vinci Construction have recently been acquired by a Texas registered holding company called "Number 8 Is In The Bag, Inc".

Armstrong denies rumours that he is behind a devious plan to flatten the Ventoux before the planned penultimate stage. He explained the numerous bulldozer convoys heading to Provence was the result of an unfortunate clash between the TDF and the annual meeting of the JCB appreciation society.

Bruyneel stated that people should stop complaining, as they'd been demanding a level playing field for years and due to the generosity of Armstrong, they were now going to get one.
bianchigirl

Apparently that's happened twice - testers happily waiting outside the team bus whilst the riders 'freshen up'.

Wonder what would happen if Garmin or BBox tried it?
KarenP

I've heard that TdeF organizers have flown in Mario Cipollini to give Mark Cavendish lessons in how to properly salute his sprint victories.  Chistian Prudhomme would not comment.

This is most likely made up. By this stage of the TDF, Cipo has forgotten where France is, so I doubt he'd have caught the right flight. Smile

Marzio Bruseghin has 31 donkeys on his land in Italy.  He also makes wine, which he hopes will be his future after cycling.
bianchigirl

20 riders reported injuries after today's stage - thank god for those security enhancing ear pieces, eh lads?

Armstrong won't be taking the bus with the rest of Astana until at least Thursday - instead he''l be chauffered back to the hotel in style.

Jenns Heppner will be DS on a new German team sponsored by NetApp - some good news for German cycling at last.

Latest on the 'Is Mark Cavendish a racist' saga as reported by Equipe (apparently he's been going on about Fucking Frenchies and how shit the whole country is) - seems he is reported as saying 'I'm an arsehole but I like France'.
Hommedesbois

Some good news! BBox to continue next year if no cosponsor can be found.
bianchigirl

Saw that too - nice to see them topping the prize winnings for the 1st week too - some vindication for Bernadeau.

bianchigirl wrote:

There's nothing wrong with f*cking Frenchies in my book, but I would think Cav would be best advised to desist until the end of the race to keep his strength up. Smile
bianchigirl

Bordry now has the full support of the French Ministry for Sport in his attempt to get the UCI testers to take their jobs seriously when it comes to Astana.

Question is, after such a clear infraction of the rules, could the ASO/Prudhomme now exclude Astana from the race?
Bartali

From another forum .....

Quote:
A little insider information for you people-

Kloden and Leipheimer were two riders that have been under suspicion due to irregular blood values, but because of Armstrong's connections and relationship with the UCI any further inquiry into possible suspensions for these riders was basically squashed.
Hommedesbois

"under suspicion" Laughing  spelling looks wrong so I Googled it and it isnt.

Just me who has lost his grip on reality then (apart from kit, MJM, SR, Fontfroide and one or two others).

May take a break ...is a week enough to master a musical instrument?
MAILLOT JAUNE

Go on hommedesbois, name names, who are the one or two others who've lost a grip on reality.....

If it's a paper comb, I'm sure you could master it in a week or less.

Roche says Contador should bide
Tour de FranceStephen Roche knows all about power struggles within pro teams 1987 Tour winner disappointed by stage 13

Astana are playing down the talk of discord but Alberto Contador is in the uncomfortable situation of wanting to win the same race that his teammate, Lance Armstrong, is gunning for. Contador won the Tour in 2007, beginning a run which would see him complete the treble of Tour-Giro d'Italia-Vuelta a España in record time.
Prior to that, Armstrong set his own record when he took seven-consecutive Tours de France. While both start the Tour on supposed equal status, the Texan's close relationship with general manager Johan Bruyneel and the dynamic of the team leads many to believe that Armstrong would be favoured if it came down to a straight tête-à-tête.
Stephen Roche was in a similar situation in the 1987 Giro d'Italia, aiming to win the race despite the fact that his Carerra team clearly preferred that the flash Italian - and defending champion - Roberto Visentini came out on top. After losing the lead in a time trial, Roche threw down the gauntlet on the stage to Sappada and directly attacked the Maglia Rosa Visentini. The rebellion earned him the pink jersey but also a very tense final few days.
Cyclingnews spoke to Roche on Friday, asking him what he would advise Contador to do as the race heads towards its big showdown. "Stay where he is," he answered. "The race will unfold itself. If I was in Contador's shoes the only thing I would be worried about is that Armstrong is basically an unknown quality because he has come back after retirement, he is 37 years of age. We also know from the past that he gets better as things go on. But if I was in Contador's shoes in Verbier, I would just let things unfold."
While an attack by Armstrong would, in theory, require Contador to hold back – or otherwise declare all out war - Roche feels that the Spaniard has a stronger card to play, even if that attack transpires.
"I think that if Armstrong goes up the road, he will be followed. Then of course Contador can follow with them," he said. "Armstrong doesn't have the power or the liveliness that Contador does in the mountains. If Armstrong goes on the attack, I am sure he will have a Schleck or someone else behind him, which in a way is ideal for Contador because he can counter-attack then. And if he gets a length or two ahead, I can't see anyone getting him back, other than perhaps Andy Schleck.
"Basically, I think that if I was in Contador's shoes, I would just let things unfold. He is my man for the overall. That said, you wouldn't know what Armstrong is capable of doing in a time trial. Imagine if he takes a lead in the time trial and then you have Armstrong in the lead and Contador second overall going onto Mont Ventoux, with Contador being a better climber? The finish could go right down to the wire."
Roche has been working with Eurosport on this year's Tour, providing analysis of the stages while fellow Irishman Sean Kelly has been doing direct commentary. Roche has been outspoken during this year's Tour; for example, he has expressed criticism at Mark Cavendish's statements in interviews. Nor did the winner of the 1987 Tour winner hold back when giving his opinion of Friday's 13th stage of this year's race.
"I was very disappointed today, that should have been a good stage," Roche said of the rain-lashed race to Colmar. "There is no way at all it should have finished off like that. When you see the final climb, not even one leader had an attack on it. They all stayed wearing their [rain] capes…they should have at least taken them off and had a go. It's insulting not to do that, to not even lift their backsides off the saddle."
He feels that time is running out fast for those who would challenge Contador and Armstrong. "Every day they are saying wait for tomorrow, wait for the next day. So why not just give the jersey to Contador tomorrow and say, 'here you are, instead of racing to Paris we'll go on holidays?' It is bit harsh to say it, but that is how I feel."

There's a joke in here somewhere about a minstrel cycle.....

Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull learnt to play the mandolin on a North Sea ferry crossing. I have a Stagg mando here but as it is Chinese made it is an unplayable toy.

I'm still watching anyway, just to see Liestrong go out the back but if that doesn't happen tomorrow.....

One cannot even master the triangle in a week.  Think not?  Try this:

A worrying snippet (to me, at any rate) on As today.  Armstrong was chatting up Andy Schleck last night.  As are speculating that TUE wants Schleck to join his team next year - don't do it, Andy!

As I posted on another thread, Tom Boonen is now out of the Tour with a 'virus'.  He should never have started.
Bartali

Well they will need a GC rider after Bertie leaves.  LL clearly isn't quite up to it and they don't have anyone else!

Will that mean the Old Man is riding again next year with a New Tailor made Team.
