Yeah, melatonin is the natural hormone that induces sleep and helps people get a deeper sleep. It's prescribed to people with sleep problems before they head down the road of tranqilisers/Sleeping Tablets. My daughter was prescribed it for years to help with her sleep patterns which in turn helped reduce the risk of her taking Epileptic fits at night, seemed to work for her.

Good Wiki entry.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melatonin

Used to happen to me regularly for years. You could try staying awake when the sun goes down cos otherwise you're not tired enough to sleep when the night comes. Easier said than done I know, but I managed it somehow and it just doesn't happen any more.

here's what I'd do.. take nightly walks.. past a local pub/bar/disco.. stopping in..
commence drinking(heavily if you wish).. until nodding off.. at least til 11pm..
continue this routine until you've reset your internal clock or liver failure..
and if you liver holds out.. continue this nightly routine as you like.. Wink

btw where are you located.. if north of 66 degrees 33 minutes N.L.  then never mind Laughing

A couple of things with varying appeal may help or hinder.

1 Marijuana. It doesn't really help you get off to sleep but once you are asleep you will stay asleep.

2. Opium or opiates such as codeine - available over the counter as co-codamol. Will help sleep, keep you asleep and give vivid dreams.

Maybe I should put a disclaimer here about taking drugs?

are you a physician or a medic cardinal not a believer in opium or smoking gace that up a long time ago as well

Hi Sam,

no I am not a medical professional of any kind. I too gave up smoking weed a while back - didn't like (and forgot to add above) that it can stop you remembering any dreams.

I'd love to try opium - or laudenum, not really fussed. Tried cocodamol - made me delerious like I haven't been since I had measles as a kid - it was great!

Maybe this came up somewhere else, but can you please use punctuation? The absence of punctuation make your posts difficult to follow.

make a pillow of dried hops and lavender - apparently hop pickers regularly doze off due to a chemical the hops give off.

Maybe a compromise and just hit return now and then as well as the space bar? At the moment I'm not really suffering as I'm just skipping the longer posts rather than get my Rosetta Stone out - bit of a shame but life's too short  Smile

BG just reminded me - if you eat a whole lettuce you will sleep for days (apocryphal). So with a bit of fine tuning you could get the dose for one night with a lovely salad supper.

http://chestofbooks.com/health/ma...rugs/Hypnotics-or-Soporifics.html

Quote:
The chief hypnotics or soporifics are Opium. Morphine. Chloral-hydrate. Butyl-chloral-hydrate (crotonchloral). Hyoscyamus. Cannabis. Paraldehyde. Urethane.

Hypnone.

Bromide of potassium.

Bromide of sodium.

Bromide of calcium.

Bromide of zinc.

Monobromo-camphor.

Hop.

Lettuce.

Lactic acid.

The most powerful hypnotics that we possess are undoubtedly opium and morphine, and they seem to act by depressing the functional activity of the brain itself, although along with this depression an anaemic condition of the organ sets in. Besides their action in producing sleep, even in health opium and morphine have the power of lessening pain and thus removing the effect which painful stimuli have in maintaining a wakeful condition. Bromide of potassium and bromide of ammonium in large doses have also a hypnotic action, and even in smaller doses, when they would not of themselves produce sleep, they appear to lessen cerebral excitement, and allow sleep to come on when other conditions are favourable. Chloral probably causes sleep both by acting on the brain itself and by causing dilatation of the vessels generally. It is therefore a useful hypnotic in persons suffering from Bright's disease, in which there is high tension of the vessels and consequently a tendency to sleeplessness.

A combination of hypnotics sometimes answers much better than any one singly. Thus morphine or opium alone sometimes simply cause excitement; but when chloral is given, either along with, or after them, the excitement is quieted and sleep occurs.

A combination also of small quantities, such as five or ten minims, of solution of opium or morphine with five grains of chloral and ten to thirty of bromide of potassium, is sometimes more useful than any one of the three used alone.

Indian hemp also is sometimes used to procure sleep, and lettuce and lactucarium are also said to have a hypnotic action. Lettuce certainly does seem to have such an action, but how much of it depends upon the juice and how much upon the mechanical effect of the indigestible fibres of the lettuce upon the stomach in drawing blood to it, it would be hard to say. Hops are said to be hypnotic, and their combination with lettuce in the form of a supper consisting chiefly of beer and salad has sometimes a very marked soporific action.
