Il Grande Giro Aperitivo 2013 - Tappe Prima: May 4th-May 7th

Struggling for an Italian "theme" to replace last year's meal, which is short a course! Anyhow, this will do.

Thanks Huw

On the face of it nothing overly-serious in Week 1 but there will be valuable seconds available for the brave.  Stage 1 has been altered by landslides so is now basically a crit, and crits mean crashes.  It might be difficult for the sprinter's teams to control but I fancy Bouhanni to maybe squeeze it.  The TTT will be interesting and Sky's record in them is a bit patchy.  Garmin have a good record in these and Movistar seem to have that Caisse d'Epargne TT mojo back.

There are three days of coastal runs that will be interesting if the wind gets up...

Did we do an Aperitivo last year? If not, I'm sure most people would join you for a drink before the cycling version of Come Dine With Me kicks off properly Smile

No. I did think about it, but wondered if it was a bit too close to antipasti.
I'll happily accept that, perhaps instead of benvenuto?
Il Grande Giro Aperitivo has a nice ring to it.

Anyhows, I'm looking at that stage 4 climb and thinking it's around the Montevergine mark. So, a semi-serious lump, three stages early and, on the face of it, an early Sky killing field. Just right to run trains up and pull the legs off most of the pretenders.
Won't be pretty.
Boogerd_Fan

As they say, you can't win it - but you can lose it.

Will be interesting to see how Sky & Astana tackle this first week. Obviously Wiggo will be looking to do something in the TT next weekend, but i'm not so sure about these semi-serious lumps creating sky train scenarios - in the tour last year, they were certainly stretched on that one day with multiple lumps (but no mountains)...

Astana are equally equipped to make a train for hill climbs.. but will they want to show their cards so early? Or wait for the Alps/Dolomites to try to isolate Wiggo?

it's going to be interesting!! Smile
gerry12ie

I think Sky are a bit light on the diesel without Porte (who is holidaying here at the moment) and Kiryienka and stage 7 could be fascinating.  Its the same roads that Sky suffered on around Chieti and although the big guns will want to save the gas for the impending TT there are gaps to be had for the brave.  It might be damp squib or it just might be fireworks all the way.  A nice little teaser before the TT...
kathy

A reminder that the Giro starts at 14.20CET tomorrow, and all GC etc picks for the Smarauder trophy must be in by then.

The FP thread is here.

The Giro rolls out and we are underway.
kathy

Off we go.  And got ES back on TV via laptop at last! Very Happy
gerry12ie

Declan Quigley got the ES UK gig Shocked He did a decent enough job at MSR but this is a huge step up.  Kelly might have to carry a few bottles for him...
kathy

Feel sorry for people who don't understand Irish accents Laughing

Pichon of FDJ becomes the first rider to inspect the Italian tarmac.
Popovych has also been on the deck.

Criterium crash fest.
kathy

Much the same as the start of any GT!
gerry12ie

Yes, I hope the sprint is safe.  OPQS seem to lack the authority you would expect from them, I'm not sure they are 100% committed to the Cavendish cause...
gerry12ie

Quick Step are all over the shop.  Now you can see why Ale Jet was wanted...
gerry12ie

Cavendish is just the best
kathy

Cav from Viviani?
gerry12ie

Yep! Bouhanni third
Fontfroide

I love it when you have teams in various leagues.  I am sure I got points for the top three in some league or other.  I am seriously impressed with Bouhanni, although it looks like he might ride against Viviani all his career.

Nice one for Cav of course.  But I like the young guys coming through.
HuwB

Talking of teams, Nizzolo was a very cheap buy. Smile

I wonder if that last chute has produced the first serious casualty of the race?
Nothing on processso alla tappa, yet.
Bartali

Do the time gaps stand for those that were held up?  I didn't think so ... but they are on screen

There is youtube video interview with Kwiatkowski on the UCI channel and he talks about racing against Sagan as a junior.  Those two look like they might dominate the classics in the coming years.  It's great when a crop of riders come through together...
gerry12ie

I think the screen gaps included the 20, 12, 8 bonuses... but I'm not sure
Bartali

Could be Gerry ... I'd forgotten about them ...
kathy

The chute was well within last 3km, so they should all get the same time.
Beasley

Cavendish, lucky for the 11th time at the Giro d'Italia! Laughing
Bartali

Lucky sod ..... I can't believe how lucky he is!! Wink
Biosphere

Caught up with yesterday late last night. Was watching as live and with not that much to go I was sure Cavendish ended up being boxed in by the RS riders. Very impressed with him and the coolness with which he dealt with Steegmans mechanical also. Was amused in the post race interview when he fingered SRAM rather than just be generic.

Keep reading about how today is twisty, technical and rolling. I imagine the road surface will be pretty crappy in places too. Scope for mistakes and accidents.

Luck. With Hondo boxing him into the barriers and then when Cav uses his World Champions Madison bike handling skills to get out to come from the other side of the road and the back.
He still gets blocked by a clever Hondo swinging out but Cav ignores it to get by to win with sheer determination.
I thought it was an outstanding win. pale whoops

Remember the Hondo tricks while riding shotgun for Petacchi.
HuwB

I've already seen a Movistar (Cobo?) getting patched up, during the recon ride.

Taylor Phinney ‏@taylorphinney 1h Just drove the TTT course. Everybody was a bit speechless by the time we got through w/it! Gonna be a spectacle, but incredibly difficult!!!
Biosphere

I like Cataldo's helmet. Roads seem better than the write ups suggested to me.
kathy

Nasty twisty finish!
gerry12ie

Pate is toast.

I'll get me coat...
kathy

But he's back on now!
Biosphere

The Pate thing was a bit weird. Unsurprisingly Sky fastest for now at intermediate.
gerry12ie

Now Knees is gone!
Biosphere

Sky burning through the riders. No spares left if someone gets a puncture etc.
Biosphere

Santambrogio had expected to lose 30-40 seconds to Sky, and is happy with 22.
gerry12ie

That Sky time is beatable - but by how many?
Fontfroide

To early to tell, but at least my hunch on Blanco was not totally off.  Unless Shack do it.
Biosphere

Burning riders backfiring for Euskatel and Lampre. Sanchez will take the hit.
Beasley

EE made a right pig's ear of that. Work to be done by Sanchez in the mountains, if he's there for the GC.
Fontfroide

Hard to say anyone could have expected the Basques to do well in a TTT.  Usually they bring up the rear or close to it.  Sanchez will have to live with that, as he knew.
kathy

Garmin down!
Biosphere

Surprised by Garmin's lack of pace at intermediate. Nibali will probably be happy?
Beasley

Garmin's pace line is looking unusually messy. Huge gaps appearing.
Fontfroide

Fontfroide wrote:

Oh well.  Loser again.
Beasley

+25 for Garmin. Not bad, but it'll be an uphill struggle for the Champ to defeat his title. They should've made time today.

Going on the splits, it looks like a marginal gains 1-2 is in the bag.
Biosphere

Orica scare some spectators!
HuwB

MMMmmm, a little bit uneventful, considering the fear that this course had produced.
Pate's problems probably cost Sky a few more seconds advantage.
Some very "ordinary" performances from some of the favourite's teams.
Poor old Samu as EE turn a decent half way split into chaos.
Fontfroide

Much as I like to watch several guys ride a line, carefully, fast and seriously, now we can get on to the real racing.  I am hoping that the next few days might produce an event or two of a positive nature, and then we get to the mountains.

I did think Garmin would do better actually.
Nolte

According to the bbc news at 6:30, bradley wiggins "is in a commanding position in the giro d'italia."

Yeh, What do they know if it's cycling and no drugs.

There is a vague truth to that one but the ITV promo a couple of days ago said he had a good chance of winning the Italian Championship.
HuwB

Davide Cassani talks about tomorrows stage:

Very technical decent.

Crosswinds, one ramp, one drag and a technical challenge.

Uuuuumm, think I'll try Oscar Gatto.
Although Hesjedal keeps popping into my thoughts.

Gerry wrote:

I like the look of today's profile. Have not caught up with the Cassani preview yet. I think the challengers need to take it to Sky at every opportunity and take a risk today. Throw "punches" at every opportunity and try to put Wiggins under a bit of mental pressure rather than letting him settle and grow into the race.

I can see the like of an Androni rider nicking the win today (the final bit of the profile reminds me a bit of Stage 3 into Rapallo from 2011), but I plumped for Goss on the chance that there's some type of a reduced bunch finish.
HuwB

The RAI open air studio looked plenty windy a few minutes ago Smile
Fontfroide

Nice clip Huw.  I love listening to Italian.  No idea why, only been there once and never had a close pal who was Italian.  I would love to spend two years learning to speak Italian.
gerry12ie

Will Cavendish make it to Milan?  I'm not sure OPQS care if he does...
kathy

Cqv looks a bit out of shape to me.
HuwB

All a bit tranquillo atm.
Thought they might have hit that climb a bit harder
to deposit a few sprinters.
Biosphere

A kid stepping out into the road to get on TV is not a good idea  Shocked
Beasley

gerry12ie wrote:

Doubt it. There isn't much for the sprinters.  I except he's done his part of the bargain - stage win + day in pink - and now it's about getting the hard miles in before le Tour
HuwB

Riders now beginning to drop out the back.
Spot the Sky riders with the day off, time.
Boogerd_Fan

Sky with the wrong tactics to chase all day today... if the live ticker is to go by, Wiggo is now isolated with Garmin and Nibs ready to pounce and test his nerves on the descent.

If the split remains, that's an awwwwwwful long time for Wiggo to need to be in Pink until Brescia.
HuwB

GC battle full on, now.
Bartali

This is getting interesting ....
kathy

Hesjedal going for broke already?  too far out surely?
gerry12ie

Sky are going to have to work hard for three full weeks.  Nibali to go next?
kathy

Think Nibs will wait for the descent
Fontfroide

Mind you, his team is working a bit on the climb.  Not sure why exactly.  They are not dropping many riders.

Go for it Nibs.
Boogerd_Fan

Nibs wanting to keep it altogether?
Doesnt make much sense. Should've left Hesjedal hanging out there as a rabbit for the descent, or forced Wiggo/Sky to chase him down.
gerry12ie

C'mon Ryder!  I love watching a champion ride like a champion.
HuwB

LOL. My comment in the fp thread comes to pass.
Ryder riding like a demon.
Beasley

The Champ's doing a lot of work for, as yet, very little gain.
Fontfroide

I just ooze jealousy and envy when I see guys descend like this, even the worst ones.

Having to descend like that for a living is not something I'm particularly jealous of  Smile Paolini is going like the clappers.

And left hanging by his team for ages.
gerry12ie

Great animated stage.  I twice looked at Paolini's odds for the stage this morning and decided not to bother Rolling Eyes
Biosphere

Tappa e maglia for Paolini.

And Hesjedal recovers 8 seconds?
HuwB

Great last 30kms.
Action and chaos.
RaboBlanco with their usual "all fall down" act.
Costs Scarponi a full minute, on a "nothing" stage.
Gotta love Il Giro.

Not quite sure what Nibs/Astana were playing at today.  Maybe Hesjedal spooked him or maybe he was on a bad day?  Or am I being too harsh?
gerry12ie

Hesjedal is a good descender.  I think if Nibali would have played ball with him they might have got away for a few seconds more...
kathy

Was disappointed with Nibs TODAY.   I thought it was and early opportunity for him to put the frighteners on Wiggins et al.
gerry12ie

Anyone else think Sky look light on the road?  Knees, Pate, Zandio and Cataldo finished way down today and only Henao and Uran managed to stay with Wiggins.

It could be a very long three weeks for some of them...
maffy

aye. found a box ms r versand sent in the winter and laced up more wheels wrongly than intended already.

like that santaromita and santambrogio are still inseparable.
kathy

What's happened to ES coverage today?  Should have been on 30minutes ago...
HuwB

Heading for a very late finish today, with 100kms still to ride and 2 long climbs in the back end.

First to the race, these past 2 days has been Sporza.
Rai tend to talk on........and on..........and on.
Eurosport UK has been somewhere in between the two.
UK has been having to wait for International.
Boogerd_Fan

Paolini talking to Wiggo to lend a hand in the chase?

I don’t think so. He’s quite comfortable for some random’s to take the Pink until Stage 9.
