Ian Tomlinson

I fail to see how this can be anything other than murder.

However, having seen how the police got away with murder at Stockwell among others I have no doubt we'll see another cover-up.

I think Blair Peach is a better analogy.

At Stockwell, the issue was whether the cops on the ground actually did anything wrong.

With Blair Peach, the cops clearly coshed him on the head, so there was no doubt that wrong was committed. None of the cops around at the incident identified the guilty party, so no charges could be brought.

Let's hope the blanket media coverage doesn't mean that a case can't be brought solely because the coverage makes a fair trial "impossible".

The video is damning, as are the eyewitness reports of what happened before the incident on video.  If what I've read in the Guardian is true, then someone should be on a manslaughter charge at least, but we know what happens when the police commit a crime...

Not really SR. The issue was wether the wrong thing that they did was lawful. To be precise; were their backs covered? Turns out they had nothing to worry about - If a policeman says 'I thought they were dangerous' then it is lawful for that policeman to shoot you in the head until your spinal column explodes - or baton you to death.

WTF.........looks so innocent .......have the police progressed since the Miners Strikes...........not from where Im at.
Mrs John Murphy

The police are what they always have been thugs and racists who love nothing more than to beat people up and get away with it because they have a uniform on.

Look at it this way - if there hadn't been any film of this the police would still be peddling the 'we were attacked line'. No wonder they want to make it illegal to film the police.

Cardinal,

In my simplistic terminology, wrong and illegal meant the same thing. I wasn't making a moral judgement on the cops at Stockwell.

I'm not sure your assessment of the circumstances in which a cop can legally shoot someone is correct. The cop concerned would need to be appropriately trained, an armed response unit would have to have been deployed and the "kill" order given. You make it sound like the cops can shoot people willy nilly and simply say they thought the person was dangerous, which I'm sure is the impression you wanted to give and I'm equally sure that you know this isn't really true.

The emotive language is a bit dubious as well. If the cops have shot and killed someone, does it matter whether the shots were to the head, the spinal column or if the spinal column explodes? If armed police are shooting to kill someone, they need to do the job properly, and it's not a pretty job. Your argument would be the same irrespective of precisely how someone was shot, so the details are just thrown in to appeal to people who are OK with the police killing people, so long as it's done in a nice way, with not too much mess or unpleasantness.

Instead they have to unexpectedly launch a "major operation" in Manchester for the 10 O Clock headlines.

The officer who shoved Ian Tomlinson to the ground has come forward.

Interesting to hear what his excuse for acting like he was involved in a fight in a pub car park is...
