suppose he's been co-opted into the vacant small enforcer role. he will enforce precisely-timed sleep amongst larger felines, then despite outward cute appearances, will manage to persuade larger cats to join him in attacking feathers and that attached to strings in a prolonged orgy of violence. sounds fun thumleft

inna worldz of non-tdf inspired journalistic hyperbole, one could describe that (cat) as a small-to-medium-sized poser.

Great cat photos too Slapshot.

Well I've tried to spend as much time as possible playing with them both and investing in 'interactive' toys .... but bottom line I think he put his foot down and bopped Oliver!!  Anyway .... both seem happier and less stressed.
Guiness

Good that it is all sorted!

We've just had guests leave the house and our cat is relieved! You see, guests came with a four year old who tormented the poor cat! Not intentionally. Just not aware how to be gentle and play with him. This evening the house is quiet. Bliss.

Ouch ouch ouch. Just highlights my point above.
SlowRower

A new addition - Feline Rower #2. Known as "Vera" at the cat shelter, but now answers to Meg - in as much as a cat answers to anything! Formerly a stray, so we have great hopes that she will be a prolific "mouser". Smile

Feline Rower #1 is heading the way of her owner - old, slow and living on past physical glories. When your role in the household is as primary "mouser", being old and slow is not really an option, so Feline Rower #2 has been "drafted" to ease the old girl's decline into retirement and the Great Catbasket In The Sky.

The two Feline Rowers seem unimpressed with each others' existence, but are limiting their displeasure to spitting rather than fighting. Feline Rower #1 has turned into something of a "fat cat" in recent months - not unrelated to Elder Little Rower having taken over feeding duties for her! - and would doubtless squash the new arrival flat if it ever did come to blows. Smile
Slapshot 3

Superb!! hope Feline Rower#1 has many years of instructing ahead of her
kathy

Aaah!  She's lovely SlowRower!
Guiness

Good luck there! Another nice addition.
SlowRower

She's definitely settling in, although she's still currently confined to barracks to ensure she realises where "home" is.

When the snow disappears, she'll soon be hoofed out into the garden to commence her "mousing" training course.

I'd forgotten how mischievous young cats are. Mischief for the old girl involves spreading out over two cushions rather than one, wereas the new arrival thinks nothing of using me as a scratch post, hiding on and in high cupboards and leaping onto my head from seeming impossible positions. Smile
kathy

My 'old' cat (11 or 12 at least) is still mischievous.  She likes playing with my hair, especially when I've just washed it.  She will sit on the back on my armchair, and when I'm most unsuspecting, her paw will lash out and try and rearrange my neatly combed locks.  She nearly did me a nasty injury once - must be the smell of shampoo she likes.

She also has a habit of sitting on top of the TV - over the ventilator Twisted Evil - it doesn't matter how often I tell her it's dangerous, as soon as my back's turned she's up there again.  Think I'll have to invest in one of these slimline models at last!
Bartali

Slimline cat or slimline TV Kathy?
kathy

Well, the cat is already pretty slimline - eats like a horse but never gets any fatter!  The other one picks at her food, but is rather plump.  Jack Sprat and his wife!
kathy

I love this!  A cat with attitude!

Toy poodle. I'll have to look for some pictures. We can't have cats. Too many members of my wife's family are allergic to them.

We did get one once. We had her for about six months. She was a very nice looking white cat. My wife's sister visited once. She told my wife if we ever wanted her to visit again, we'd have to get rid of the cat. I said, "What's the problem?". Wink

Funny thing is that once we got rid of the cat, her sister moved to another state about six months later.

MAILLOT JAUNE

Nice cats ss ! When you see them altogether, 3 cats seems quite a lot, but when I think back, my parents had 3 cats at one point (Felix, Fuzzy and Poppy).
kathy

Slapshot, I think you ought to enter that photo in the caption contest!  Lovely cats, and Fede, your cat, and the doggie are gorgeous too.  MJ, I take it you have dogs - any piccies of them?
MAILLOT JAUNE

No kathy, no pets at all, well except for a wee outdoor mouse, Marvey, that runs between my fence and my neighbour's. What made you think I had dogs?
kathy

Just thought you mentioned having dogs at one time?
SlowRower

Feline Rower #2's integration is now complete. She went on the standard advance catflap training course and now spends the hours of darkness patrolling the garden, compiling a body count unseen outside of an episode of Midsomer Murders.

She also chases Feline Rower #1 around the house and eats her food. Seems a bit harsh on the Old Girl, but she's benefiting from increased exercise and reduced food intake and will soon be half the cat she was!

FR#2's only moment of discomfort came when she came in through the catflap whilst I was aboard the turbo. I'm sure she managed to split, hiss, puff out her fur, turn round and exit via the catflap all in the same move. I'm not sure she even touched the floor between passages through the flap, such was her desire to get away from the red-faced, sweaty aparitition that had greeted her. Smile

Some superb shots on there, Bio.  How do they get their cats to co-operate with having their photos taken?  My cats either

1. Walk towards the camera to see what I'm doing

2.  Turn their heads away just as I'm taking the shot.

3.  Go to sleep

or

4.  Run away rapidly.

Purrrrfect shots there.

Our cat is camera shy, too, Kathy, apart from that one shot I posted on here a while ago! Seems to have been the only time I was able to capture those beautiful eyes.

In my case I substitute the word "kids" for the word "cats" in your post   Laughing

There are some excellent photos on there, but then some of the equipment that's being used is professional grade so that's to be expected - most likely some professional photographers posting too.

FYI, it's a live thread, so for those that enjoyed it, it's worth checking back in a few days to see the latest offerings are.
kathy

I lost one of my cats today.  She was fine yesterday, ate her tea.  In the night, I heard her crying - her back legs were paralysed.  The vet did some Xrays this morning, spinal damage, no hope of recovery, so she has been put to sleep.  She was at least 14, so had had a good innings, but it was so sudden.  I can only assume she'd fallen down the stairs or something.

So now I only have one.

It's Marmelade, the one in my current avatar.
SlowRower

Sorry to hear about this Kathy. Sad

kathy

Thank you all!

Gerry, Lorca looks lovely Very Happy   Did you know that Lorca was a town abuot 50km away from where I live?

Today, I went to do my weekly stint at a local animal charity shop.  Telling some frineds there about what happened to Marmelade.  A couple of hours later, they started chatting about this young cat that their local friendly vet is unable to rehome - he's black, and for some reason, Spaniards think black cats are unlucky!  So - I express mild interest, my friend's husband marches me down to the vet's surgery where the kitten is living.  Result - on Monday he is moving in with me.  Very lively little thing, already had a claw in my arm, and will probably bully my plump lazy Houdi, who is about three times his size.  He was trying to beat up a large Dalmation this morning.

I will post some photos if and when he'll stay still long enough.  No name yet - I don't like his Spanish name, so I'll wait and assess his character first, but it will probably be something macho!
Biosphere

Hope you have many happy years together Very Happy

He's here at last!  He managed to escape yesterday when they tried to put him in a basket, and didn't come back for hours!

My friend who is the secretary of the charity had named him Jack in the ad she produced to try and find him a home (as in Blackjack).  Someone here has a cat called Jack, don't they.

I haven't decided on his name yet though.  His Spanish name was somthing like Saloman, which I don't like!  Houdi is suitable underwhelmed by his presence.  She's been hissing at him, but there's been no violence and it's gone quiet now.  He has already jumped on my lap as I was trying to take a photo!  Black cats are so difficult to photograph.  This is the best shot I got, considerably cropped and brightened.

MAILLOT JAUNE

Just catching up on all the recent threads as I've been on my holi-bobs. kathy, my sympathies regarding your cat, Marmelade (cool name) - at least she didn't suffer and you'd given her a good life. I'm sure Houdi will be a bit out of sorts at the moment - losing one buddy, but gaining another, a lot for a kitty to get used to. Good luck with the new addition, hope he settles in well. He is one lucky cat to have you as his owner!
Bartali

He's a lovely little fella Kathy and Jack is a cool name for a cat.  (Yup ... my little Jack is named after Jack Dawkins, the Artful Dodger!)
Slapshot 3

Okay, here's a thought, how many of you have named pets after literary characters??? The three horrors are named after Harry Potter characters, Nymphadora Tonks, Sirius Black and Mr Ollivander.......anyone else??
MAILLOT JAUNE

Not exactly literary characters but our first two cats were called Oscar and Felix, after The Odd Couple. They were both from the same litter but Oscar was Grey and White and Felix was Black and White - an odd couple, we thought. Then after Oscar's demise, we, well I say we, but, my Dad (who vowed that we would never get another cat) was the one who persuaded my Mum to see this poor little wretch in a pet shop, so we ended up with another Grey and White cat. Dad wanted to call him Smokey, but we over-ruled him and called him Fuzzy. Because, he was Fuzzy -but to placate Dad (who was into his golf) we said it was also after Fuzzy Zoeller, the golfer.
Then Poppy came along - dear knows where Mum got that name from and then years later after the cats were long gone, Mum gets a dog called Muffin - because she said she likes muffins (no dodgey remarks please) and that he's the colour of a muffin.  A normal muffin - not chocolate or blueberry..........
Anyway, well impressed with those of you who've come up with classic literary names.
Bartali

Oliver (Twist) and Jack (Dawkins)

Oliver was quite scrawny as a kitten and was always wanting MORE food.  Jack was here there and everywhere, ducking and diving, but also looking after little Oliver.

Oh ... and just for good measure they have a pitbull shaped scratching post called bullseye!

Does Bishop Brennan (from the character in Father Ted) count as literary? Who can forget the episode "Kicking Bishop Brennan up the Arse"? - of course we call him "Len" for short, but that'll be lost on those who aren't (or weren't) into Father Ted....  Wink

kathy

I would have thought Bart's cats would have been Gino and Fausto!

We never named many of our cats ourselves.  Mostly they've been rescue cats who already have names.  Even Marmelade, who was a stray in our French village, was named by the old French lady across the square.  The only one I've named was Panda, the black and white kitten I found in the street.

The kitten is responding to Jack, so it looks as though it might stick!
