Horseshoe Pass Annual Cycling Hill Climb 11th Oct 2009

Was at the Horseshoe Pass today. Cracking views from the top. On the very very slim chance that someone here took part, a few photos to bump the spammers

Nice shots.  I am particularly taken by the first and last ones.  I like the backgrounds, the framing and the sense of proportion.  Very tasty.  the closeups of the suffering cyclists are too close to reality and bite too deep.  I also liked the shot of the official and the others hanging out together.  seemed to be a little bit timeless, something we have all seen since time immemorial.

Thanks.

the laws of the country and rules of the governing body (for over 18s) do not require helmet wearing. probably what gives the pictures their timeless quality, and elevates the sense of suffering.

yep. ta bio.

Ta for nice words.

If you think the ones I snapped were suffering, you should have seen some of them. Decided just to give them a word of encouragement instead of intruding with the camera.

I like the way an event like this can span five or six decades in terms of the ages of the competitors.

I really needed a better lens for the long distance shots across the horseshoe (first and last), but I really don't cos it would cost thousands Shocked One thing that wasn't captured was the strong headwind on that part of the course.

The ToB needs to visit Wales for a least a day.

Well it's not the TOB if it doesn't, is it?

Love the Pictures Bio and that's a Lonely Atmosphere. Oh it's TT and how it's supposed to be.
This one is the start but no riders queuing.
The sign by the timekeeper says "warning cycle race" and I hope they had one, some distance earlier.
Has to be the start as there is no Checkered Flag and yet he appears to be waiting. (oh I do know that feeling as nobody turned up that morning)

Be Lucky...and I dived in, thinking it was Altoona, Pen.

Cheers Cape. The "wall" of slate was impressive to stand under. Very steep.

Mr S. That was actually a photo pretty close to the end. Some type of checkpoint, but you'd know better than me. A few along the route too if I remember. There were signs a few miles before the start so it was all well marshalled.

Lonely is a good word to describe it. Very blowy and overcast day. Not many people around. Remember driving along A12 (very flat and straight English "motorway" for those unfamiliar) from London very early on a Sunday morning (not long after sun up) and passing TTers in event. Impressed by dedication, but thought they were mad to be on the road with pretty much just Artics for company. Good for bursts of drafting I guess.

This isn't the start but is actually at one of the corners on the horseshoe bend itself and there are watchers to make sure no-one crosses the white lines.
