Heavy going at the Galibier

Found this on a skiing website. Rule 9 with attitude...

MAILLOT JAUNE

Wow! Got a pic (which I can't find) of when the Tour went over in 2005 (I think).
Bartali

First week in July 2006 ... 8kg lighter now.

There's a hint of Tony Martin face-wise about that picture, Bart, notwithstanding that you don't use a circular saw for your front chain ring!

From what I can gather, the Tour stage will have to be re-routed on the Modane-ADH stage. One of the tunnels has collapsed and won't be fixed until late July at the earliest.

There is a very new Marmotte route this year, which might take my fancy in the future...Smile

Shame.
Although the penultimate stage isn't until late July.
There is rather a lack of roads to provide alternatives, depending on which tunnel (I don't suppose you mean the tunnel at the top of the Galibier, which they won't be going through).

The Marmotte is going via the Mollard, the hairpins from the Dauphine stage on Sunday and the Croix de Fer. the Tour could go from Modane to St Jean de Maurienne to pick up some of this route rather than the Telegraphe at St Michel de Maurienne.

The tunnel in question is near the Bargage du Chambon. Bl**dy awful things on the way back to Bourg.

Found it.
Surprisingly it does look like there is no sensible way round it.
I don't know what local traffic must make of it.
I suppose they could "off-road" around the southern edge of the lake ?

There's a boat for the locals - priority to school kids!

It must be a royal pain up the backside.

If my knees ever get better I'd have a pop at the new route.  No valley of death would suit me better ...
