Google Chrome?

OK, back to computerland.

Has anyone here tried Google Chrome?  I've read that it's the best thing since sliced bread, so I downloaded it tonight.  It seemed terribly slow compared with Firefox, and wouldn't seem to load Facebook properly.  I couldn't seem to see how to get any more tabs either.

I play Scrabble on my PC, and suddenly I couldn't get the complete grid up using Fifrefox, so I've been using IE to play.  IE is its usual rubbish self, and I have to keep reloading Scrabble from Facebook every 15 minutes or so, and it's beginning to drive me bonkers.

I had a play with it when the first beta version was released. Certainly seemed quicker than other browsers, but for me it suffered from the same basic problem that IE has in comparison with Firefox....namely the lack of a rich development community which has produced a plethora of plug-ins of varying usefulness. It's a bit like the problem that all the smartphone producers have in trying to compete with the iPhone....until they get an App store as rich and varied as Apple's they will always struggle to compete even if the actual device is in some way better than the iPhone.

So for me, until I can get functionality such as Tab Mix Plus, Adblock Plus, IE View and Fireshot within Chrome or IE then Firefox will remain my default browser.

BTW, getting more tabs in Chrome just involves clicking on the '+' sign immediately to the right of right-hand tab in the tab bar.

Re your other new problem with Firefox, do you by any chance use the Google Toolbar for Firefox? Reason for asking is that I do and it recently auto-updated and this caused a few minor irritants....have therefore disabled it pending getting hold of the pre-updated version.

Ah, right!  I do use the Google toolbar because I find it useful for doing quick searches.  Thanks for the tip, TNG.  Apart from my current problem with Scrabble I'm happy with Firefox.  I'll try disabling the Toolbar.

Edit - didn't work unfortunately.  I think it's something I clicked inadvertantly.  There is a right-hand margin with adverts, and the size of the margin has increased and blocked out part of the Scrabble Grid.  I have no idea what I did, so I don't know how to get back to what I had originally.  I'll have to play with it some more, because IE is driving me round the bend!

What Scrabble web-site are you using? Happy to have a look to see if I can id the problem.

It's the one connected to Facebook - don't know if you can access it if you're not on Facebook.

It was OK when I first starting using it on Firefox - it just went weird for no apparent reason.  Looking at their 'problem' pages, other people seem to be having trouble as well, but they don't seem to do anything about it.  Anyway, I've now managed to load the page successfully using Google Chrome, which does seem to be an improvement of IE.  I'll see how it goes when I get into a serious playing session again Laughing

Had a quick look using Firefox and everything seemed fine.

If it works properly on both IE and Chrome that would tend to indicate that the web-site is OK and that you have a problem somewhere within your FF settings. Can't think though what that could be, have played around with the zoom settings but can't create your problem. Do you use the sidebar at all? If so have you tried turning it off?

Sorry I can't be of more help....

Hi TNG, I think it may be something to do with the zoom settings, but I can't work out what's happened.  The good news is that I've been able to suss out Google Chrome and it works fine on there.  Still using Firefox for everything else though.

I've had the sidebar on and off as well, but it's not that Very Happy

Thanks for your help.  Google Chrome is working a lot faster now - think there must just have been a glitch when I first tried it.

I've just received a reply from the Scrabble help line about my problem with the game on Firefox.  They suggested that I might be able to alter my zoom settings by using the wheel on the mouse whilst holding down the control key.  Hey presto!  It worked.  I'd previously tried using Ctrl key and the + and- keys which didn't work.  In the meantime, I've been happily playing Scrabble using Google Chrome.

Hi Kathy, you can always restore zoom settings to 'normal', i.e. 100%, by clicking on View (Menu Bar), Zoom, Reset.

I've just reproduced the fault and tried that - it worked of course Laughing   Easy when you know how!  I'm still trying to think what I could have done in the first place - I don't usually sit here hitting the Control key, and I don't see how else the problem could have ocurred Confused
