Giro Lombardia 05.10.14

More changes rung for Lombardy this year.  The race moves back to Sunday, the start changes to Como, the finish returns to Bergamo, Ghisallo comes after just 58km and Muro di Sormano doesn't feature.

With that short climb and wiggly descent it looks tailor made for a fit Nibali ....

A bit far out, having to launch his attack from Kazakhstan.  Wink

The old finish will have the old result. Somebody will get away on the climb, but be reeled in for a modestly sized group sprint.
Imo, this return to Bergamo is a step backwards for the race.

It can be a brilliant race and, for me, is second only to RVV but they have done a serious amount of tinkering with it in recent years and it seems to be going nowhere fast.  In 'monument' terms the Strade Bianche has more going for it at the moment in terms of having a fixed place in the calendar and a reasonably stable route and a fantastic finish.  Maybe the biggest problem is that the teams and riders aren't really treating it with the same respect as they would LBL for instance?  Shame, but we shall see how it goes...

Organisers didn't want Rodriguez winning it for a third year running?

It's quite impressive how it's become a proper "classic", whilst still being less than 10 years old. I shall reflect on it some more next week whilst I'm sunning myself in the Piazza del Campo Smile

Well if a monument is defined by its pantheon of winners then Lombardy looks the real deal over tha last 15 years whereas LBL (my second favourite classic) looks a little ragged IMO.

Well, here are the Bergamo winners, 1995-2003.
1995 Gianni Faresin (ITA) Lampre-Panaria
1996   Andrea Tafi (ITA) Mapei-GB
1997   Laurent Jalabert (FRA) ONCE
1998   Oscar Camenzind (SUI) Mapei-Bricobi
1999   Mirko Celestino (ITA) Team Polti
2000   Raimondas Rumšas (LTU) Fassa Bortolo
2001   Danilo Di Luca (ITA) Cantina Tollo-Acqua e Sapone
2002   Michele Bartoli (ITA) Fassa Bortolo
2003   Michele Bartoli (ITA) Fassa Bortolo

I can't believe it's been 11 years since we saw this finish.

There is an FP thread Here.

were those from group sprints? memory is a bit hazy - but wasnt Celestino a solo finish, same with Bartoli's wins.. Camenzind was just ahead of a chase group including Boogie..

I like this race. Happy to see Bertie & Valv start.. because it means there should be fireworks Smile

The good news is that Eurosport have been live for 10 minutes.
The bad news is that it's the German version.

80kms to go.
Break has 4 minutes.

I still have Quigley wittering on over the French commentary of Euro Metropol...

As an aside I have been puzzling over who was the last World Champion to win a monument as champ and I just can't think.  Any ideas?
HuwB

Bella Italia today.
Last climb, then a whole lot of nothing until Bergamo.

Aye, it looks gorgeous.  Last time I went it pissed stair-rods and I ended up watching it in bed with epic man-flu.  I would like to give it another go next year though...

Michal of the perfect sock height cramps up and out, Dumoulin crashes out.  Hermans and Weening still going well.  Probably not well enough though...
gerry12ie

Yesssss!!!! Very Happy  Very Happy  Very Happy  Very Happy
Bartali

What a joke!  Fair play to Martin, but what a pack of numpties .....
gerry12ie

Perfectly timed. Makes up for the last couple of big monument crashes, and a nice pick for Huw!
Bartali

He took that well and 'if' there was a bit of fortune involved, well he deserves it.  As we saw last week, you don't win unless you have a go ...
gerry12ie

As for the rest?  I think we can call it the 'Valverde Effect'.  Wellens is a fine young rider - there is a lot more to come from him...
HuwB

Valverde Kwiatkowski'd again.

Yes. I reckon folks have figured out that if he's there, an early attack will probably pay dividends.

What was Contador doing, lying down when he should have been dancing on his pedals? Laughing

I love those classic finishes, I guess that is why they are classics. Rolling Eyes

He surely did get going pretty fast.  No one noticed him coming and I doubt if anyone could have caught him.  Classic.
Bartali

Personally I think he would have been easily caught if the others hadn't thrown the towel in.  No disrespect to Martin, but that wasn't a hesitation in the group ... it was a virtual track stand!.  IMO Martin did the only thing he could do from that group at that stage of the race - and good for him for doing it.  Valverde has been sussed ... or he's completely lost his confidence for some reason.

yes, it did seem that they weren't trying to catch Martin
Fontfroide

OK, you win, I will look more closely at the finish.
