Vino's boys setting the early pace, well ahead of Ag2r, if that's any marker.

RAI have this multiple camera option for the first time:

http://www.raisport.rai.it/dl/rai...-8f4f-4944-be7e-ad1838660caf.html

Lots of helicopter noise!
Nolte

astana still top with sky, ettixx, bmc finished
HuwB

OGE ride to form, unlike Sky.
Gerrans currently in pink.
gerry12ie

In fairness, there aren't too many teams that target races in stages with the single-singlemindedness that OGE do.  Saxo going too fast for Contador and Basso?
Nolte

for basso definitely as he drops off and straight away, commentator rules him out as a pink jersey contender Wink
Slapshot 3

Looked like Berto tried to wait for Basso... keep him there
HuwB

So, after the handicap that is the TTT, we have
Contador
Aru @ 6"
Uran @ 12"
Porte @ 20"

So much for the strength of Team Sky.
Porte will not be a happy bunny.
Contador looked a bit ragged, having not turned a pedal in anger in 6 weeks, but his team drag him into an advantage.

No wonder many folks are not fond of a team discipline being incorporated into an individual GC.
Fontfroide

Might be the last time that Sky and Katusha get beat by both IAM and FDJ!!!
Bartali

HuwB wrote:

Yup ... been saying it for years.
Nolte

some good second rate sprinters here, lobato del valle trueba, pelucchi, modolo, appollonio, ferrari, beletti. Nice for fping but maybe too much choice outside of the main sprinters of greipl, mezgec, matthews
Biosphere

Knew the result but didn't watch until this morning. I don't tend to find the TTT so objectionable since many mountain stages are de facto TTTs these days where a strong team with a strong leader can be far more damaging.

Thought more of the course would have been directly on the seafront for an old railway line - didn't really show off the region that well in the end. Useless bit of trivia, the new railway line is buried deep in the mountains and for example is further back from the sea than Poggio villiage (crest of the climb). The platforms in new Sanremo station are set well back too so there's a longish pedestrian tunnel from the entrance of the station to the platforms.

Having lazy morning and reading this. It comes across like one of those "what I did on my summer holiday" essays we had to write as kids Smile

Indeed, but that might be a bit nearer the mark if the gig was 'write about being a narcissistic, self-obsessed dick with an overbearing sense of entitlement on your summer holidays' type of thing... Wink  Very Happy

Mrs John Murphy

It is a sharp race to the bottom to see who can take over from McQuaid as the biggest twat in cycling.
Biosphere

Mothers Day stuff out of the way and 40km to go. Not sure that Orica drinks vest it's any better than the old way of doing it.
gerry12ie

Mental note made - must get back to Genoa someday soon.  Quite looking forward to this sprint I must say.  First GT sprint of the year and all that.

Is the finish straightforward, or a bit tricky Bio?
Biosphere

ItalianTV sending kisses to all the mamas. This may take a while Wink

Sprint is dead straight for the last 800m or so. Uphill drag of 2-3% all of that though. The official profile is a bit off I would say.
Biosphere

Ok, more like 400m uphill. Quintana junior down. Did Haussler get back on bike?
gerry12ie

My spidey senses are tingling, I expect another pile up...
gerry12ie

How did I fail to get that Avengers gig? Wink
gerry12ie

Pozzovivo losing time here.  Can't see Gerrans but I guess he is safe
Biosphere

Greipel went far too soon. Very nicely done by Viviani.
Bartali

Messy sprint.  Nice win for Viviani.
gerry12ie

Very scrappy that.  Not sure too many read the road book very carefully beforehand.
gerry12ie

I like the thoughts of Flecha afterwards on ES.
Mrs John Murphy

Wow. I actually get an FP right. I think for the first time ever.
Nolte

any good view of what happened modolo? I remember bettini in the worlds in cophenagen voicing his annoyance of modolo for giving up the sprint after some pushing in it.

What did he say?

Given that they had been up the street twice already, I would have expected them to have held back their efforts a bit more.

Oh dear. Well someone's Giro has lasted all of two stages

More or less that everyone went too early (well Matthews and Greipel) and that he thought that the finish was perfect for Viviani.  Welcome Flecha and MJM our Skybot overlords Wink
gerry12ie

Serry is out by the looks of it, and he was the main support for Uran in the mountains.  Still, Uran didn't have too much help the last two years and it didn't hamper him too much.
kathy

Don't know what Lampre were playing at.  Ferrari leading out Modolo???  And when Modolo fouled it up, Rerrari just gave up!
gerry12ie

The Lotto Jumbo transfer on the KOM jersey looks like it was knocked up in Word Art
Bartali

Looked like Modolo got baulked.  By Petacchi I think?
HuwB

Came home to watch the stage, only to switch on and in that instant, have the result given out.
Sometimes, you just can't win................I was beginning to think that about Viviani!

Oh and interesting minor fact. Sky failed to win a single GT stage last year, now take the first GT road stage of the season.
Nolte

Bartali wrote:

in the third last paragraph is what i was referring to earlier

http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/b...-criticism-of-italian-performance

it seems in his character, which for a sprinter seems not good
HuwB

Right, watched now.
Nothing stage of a GT causes more time gaps for some GC hopefuls than the average MTF. Fairly typical, that.
Serry out is quite a big blow for Uran's hopes, too. His team was not exactly over endowed with climbing support to begin with.
Pozzovivo already looks consigned to the fight for 5th.

Caused by an idiot on a fixie jumping into the bunch. There have been some daft stunts in the past, but this takes the biscuit.
HuwB

Very grainy pictures, but you can just make out the nutcase riding into the peloton.

There is a fans video if the incident. As clear as day. He lifts up the barrier rope and chaos ensues.

Beggars belief.  I hope the moron gets done for it.  But he won't...
mazda

A big break up the road today.
Can't believe it will be allowed too much slack.
OGE have Clarke and Chaves in it, Saxo have Boaro, so they probably won't be chasing.
As usual it will probably be the team in black and blue, but they like doing that kind of thing.  Rolling Eyes

edit - Puccio is in the break as well.

Isn't that the same person cycling away along the promenade at around the 25" mark ?

Could explain why it took a while to work out what happened.

Tinkoff seem intent on total control for three weeks.
We are seeing a different team to that off the early season.

Ticker says bad crash for Pozzo, unconscious?

Nothing beats a big middle finger at the biopassport.
kathy

Pozzovivo taken to hospital, but Doctor says not life-threatening thank goodness.
mazda

Quote:
Orica-GreenEdge are helping with the chasing now

Can only assume there are some sprinters chasing that they don't want to get back on.
HuwB

The inevitable sprint result........except for Tiralongo in 5th!
The next three weeks looks to be a battle of Astana's audit versus Tinkoff's Killimanjaro concoction.
HuwB

Video of Pozzovivo arriving at hospital, looking very badly beaten up, but clearly in no danger............well, by NHS treatment standards that is:

By the looks of it Griepel, Viviani got dropped and came in about 14 mins down.
mazda

If you were Clarke wouldn't you be a bit peeved at your own team chasing you down to take the leaders jersey from you ?
Mrs John Murphy

Of course but then they would say that Matthews has a better chance of winning the stage, and winning the points jersey overall.

Wasn't he just there as a spoiler though? He only stated working when Saxo caught him. They have a good team dynamic, so I think he knows the score.

I would not have enjoyed watching live today once Pozzovivo crashed. Much too reminiscent of my day in Rapallo 4 years ago. Very happy he seems to be OK.
HuwB

Beautiful weather for today's beautiful stage:

Temperature nudging towards the 30 degree mark.

I see what you mean.
None of the other breakaways complained about his lack of work.
And it might have been bad form if he had stayed away to the end and then won, so Orica had to win the stage some other way.

Notwithstanding my FP, I expect racing today and wouldn't at all be surprised to see Contador do something since Uncle Oleg reportedly has guests in a VIP spot at the finish. Besides, if Contador wins the Giro in the first week, then he gets two extra weeks recovery before the Tour Smile

That said, I would quite happily just sit in for a bunch sprint and watch the Cinqueterre in HD this afternoon were it possible. On more than one occasion I hiked along through the vines just a little bit below the Cinqueterre road they will use this afternoon. Stunning Smile

With regards to warm weather, we're nudging 30℃ here today as well, but we are forecast to plummet by nearly 20℃ by Friday, with snow above 1200m. Seems like snow for the Giro is the new rain for Wimbledon Wink

Help !
I am trying to use the Gazzetta site again.
This really ought to be as useful as the Tour site is come July, but I always find it to be really annoying and useless.

http://www.gazzetta.it/Giroditalia/2015/it/diretta-tempo-reale/

Anyway, on the live screen above it says to "Click on the bars ... to view the classifications in real time".
Which bars ? I've clicked on every square millimeter of the ****** screen.
mazda

Gruppa sitting up.
Break of 12 or 13 looks to be getting away.
Clarke is there again and looks to be working as far as I can see.
mazda

Etixx now leading Gruppa.
Leaders are 9'30" up the road with Cataldo (edit) a minute behind.
mazda

lol
Astana had a man on front of the peloton.
Up ahead Zeits has dropped back from leaders to wait for Cataldo.
Promptly remove themselves from head of peloton.

There is another group somewhere, including Kreuziger, but I think they are slowly going backwards.

Yeah, it seems worse than in previous years. Too many gimmicks getting in the way of giving you the key information.
mazda

5 Astana leading a main peloton of about 20.
Of course still a lot more still up the road.
mazda

So will Astana try to attack Contador on the final climb ?
mazda

Leading group back up to 14 - Siutsou, Kreuziger, Amador, Clarke, Chaves, Formolo.
Still looking like they will be caught - now down to the magic 1 minute per 10 km.

edit - Moinard, Visconti, Puccio, Atapuma(?)

edit - Monfort, Mosalve, Colbrelli, Finetto (?)
HuwB

I'm wondering what to expect next in this brave new clean World we are seeing.
Astana haven't used up a single domestique on this rampage.......
.........sorry, I mean chase.
Perhaps they aren't planning to stop until Abertone.
Has been fun to see the Contador fanzone having palpitations over Kreuziger being 10 minutes up the road. Smile
Fontfroide

Bit strange for those of us who came in half an hour ago.  Took me several minutes to find out who was where.  Bit of entertainment today.  Seems Astana has had some seriously excellent pasta.  Curious still who has been dropped.  Seems like a big mountain stage, dribs and drabs everywhere.

Guess I can watch the highlights.  Not at all what I expected.  Matthews, Sagan, glad I didn't pick them.  Mind you, Gerrans is not a rider whose name I have heard either.
mazda

Formolo attacks at bottom of slope.
Visconti and Moinard go after him.
mazda

Contador has no team mates left, unless you count Astana.
Fontfroide

This is a well designed stage.  Besides the coastal towns which are lovely.  No way you can figure out what is going to happen.  Young guys coming up, like Formolo.
mazda

Formolo has 30" on Visconti and Moinard.
Aru/Contador/Porte at 45".
mazda

Clarke makes it back to the favourites group. Chaves is there as well.
Fontfroide

Allez Formolo.
mazda

20" - 2.5 km.
Go on lad.
mazda

He did it.
Clarke grabs second.
mazda

Clarke thought he had won !
Visconti quickly had a word.
http://t.co/aF7fgZDKzD
HuwB

Very funny finish, but at least Clarke will have more than just a pink face.

Yet folks still think the Tour is the better race.
Just 4 days in and we get an epic stage, regardless of any suspicions.
Extraordinary, in all senses, perhaps, but also a quite fantastic spectacle, in all, too.
Fontfroide

You could not say enough about this stage, Huw.  Really good.  Bodes well.  The Tour will most likely (not for sure of course) have flat stages and nothing going on for a week or so.  They planned it that way.  whoever thought up this stage, combined with the aggressive riding of Astana, should be given a big prize.

Nice kid Formolo, and a happy Clarke.  Mind you, none of us are going to get many points.
HuwB

Day 4 and although the GC is still a mix of GC and breakaway riders, it's already apparent that only a few remain in contention.
Taking out the chaff, we have:

Kreuziger
Contador
Aru   @   6"
Formolo   @   14"
Porte   @   20"
Landa   @  48"
Uran   @   54"
Caruso   @   1-00"
Geniez   @  1-01"
Konig   @  1-02"
Van Den Broeck  @  1-04"

The remaining potential contenders are already distant.
Hesjedal for instance is  @ 5 minutes.
Bartali

Late to the party but I enjoyed that Smile
gerry12ie

Great stuff 'twas a shame I couldn't see it live.  For a team that would probably be best staying under the radar Astana enjoyed the bright lights today, non? Wink
