Epixx fail

What the hell is wrong with them? Is it the curse of a super-team (ie T-Mob) where you have too many talented riders riding for themselves? No direction from management?

They shouldn't screw up this often.

Can't figure it but yesterday was bizarre, Vandenbergh hammering away with his earpiece swinging while Stybar punctured.  Then he distances Terpstra in the finale, and he has to chase hard to bridge back...

That's poor management and guys not singing off the same hymn sheet IMO.  Things must be fairly toxic when you consider why Steegmans left for Trek after OPQS chased him down in the Nationals so they could sprint for Boonen...

Quote:
Steegmans fell out with QuickStep during last year’s national championships when his trade team decided to chase down a late move he was involved with in order to set up a sprint for Tom Boonen. The tactic spectacularly back-fired as Boonen missed out and Steegmans angrily lamented his team’s decision afterwards.

It almost seems like egos out of control.

I'm reminded of the time T-Mob chose to use the team to chase down Vino.

They are rudderless without Boonan.
The old king is dead, the post is vacant.
So now too many wanabe chiefs who then make very reluctant Indians.
You would think Terpstra the natural replacement but:
a) He's Dutch
b) A bit of a tool by Dutchie forum accounts.

Who exactly is the road captain at Etixx?  I would have thought Stijn was the obvious man for the job, but he was seriously erratic yesterday.  One chief should be enough (Eisel, Rogers, Paolini - everyone knows them) but at Etixx I'm not sure anyone knows...

Nice piece by Millar on the role...

I kind of wonder if Vandenbergh's earpiece flapping was 'accidentally on purpose'

it is similar to my thoughts on it, that without boonen, they are leaderless and that this has created a vacuum and war of secession for the position of leader so you have been seeing in these races, the riders trying to hurt their team mates to stake the claim on the leadership but what this will result in is not a clear leader for flanders and paris-roubaix but a divided team who will be concentrating on themselves

leferve needs to get them working together and quick

Was it Wilfried Peeters in the car because he has won G.W. but is not a seasoned winner.
Well I think he is the problem because that win he had was the way Patrick Lefevere's team could always get a result when the peloton watches his star rider and Museeuw agreed that Peeters should go. He did and the peloton wouldn't chase so the team won.

Patrick Lefevere is now CEO of the team and for the last couple of years has not had a hands on role with the team.
The start to this season' results might prompt him to get in the car again. ?

Clearly it's what Twain had in mind with "Lies, damned lies and statistics" Wink

If I had to guess on what's going on, I too would have said it's jostling for protected status now that Boonen is going . . . going . . . gone.

Now, how many wins have Quickstep had in Belgium and/or Europe.
This is Quickstep's time of year that they live for and I make it 2 wins of Note but you can make your own minds up about those Statistics above.

Mr. S is right.  They aren't winning the races they should be winning.  Omloop was the most blatant example, where they had three against one (their two main classics leaders and the No. 1 diesel) and royally ballsed it up.  In Le Samyn they had four riders in the final dozen or so and lost out to Boeckmans.  On Sunday we saw the same result, and in all three of these instances Vandenbergh and Terpstra were in the final.

I don't know if there is some issue between Big Stijn and Terpstra but there sure as hell isn't any cohesion...

On another note I see Steegmans has crashed out of De Panne - I think thats the last three races he has gone down in Sad
Mrs John Murphy

Good at winning 'shitty little races' ?

In case there was any doubt my "Lies, Damned Lies and Statistics" comment was meant to convey that they were not winning the races they are expected to.

Although this is a counter-intuitive argument, I almost wonder if the weakness of the opposition is bringing their failure into sharper focus.

Roll back a few years and you had not just QS but also Lotto, Rabo, Saxo, Vino era Astana, sending strong teams to the Classics. With perhaps the exception of fellow 'super-team' Sky, there don't seem to be teams with as much of a focus on the classics. Epixx are built for the classics, the opposition doesn't look as strong as in previous years, thus they look like they are performing worse.
Boogerd_Fan

well i think there are plenty of teams that can counter that... 2 spring to mind: Lotto (BE) have a strong team - Roelandts and Debusschiere in particular, and Wellens will be good for the Ardennes. BMC worth a mention - they have GVA, Gilbert and a heap of 2nd raters like Burghardt who are all useful in shaping a Classic.

Lotto (NL) are built around Sep.. that he didn't win something yet this year is a mystery - but i think that will be corrected on the weekend Wink
