Earthquake hits southern Spain

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/w...hits-southern-Spain-ten-dead.html

I have had people ringing me up and emailing me, and leaving messages on Facebook all evening.

The epicentre was about 40km south of me - I didn't feel a thing, although a friend nearby felt it.  I must have been watching the end of the Giro at the time of the first quake.

I'm surprised you didn't feel it. The key to feeling particularly smaller (or further away) quakes is sitting, or laying. Sitting works even better at a desk with a leg touching the desk. I've felt a number of smaller quakes that nobody else did because of that method.

Some cool earthquake information can be found HERE. Fortunately, or unfortunately, California/Nevada have their very own section.

All I know is that I don't want to be in Bucharest when the big one hits there (which is likely to be soon) because I don't stand a chance if I am.

There must be something odd about me, because all my neighbours heard it.  I have just heard something that sounded like thunder - possibly that's what I mistook it for yesterday - hope it's not another one!  The cats did get excited at around that time, so they must have been aware.

At the time of the second quake, there was a power cut for about ten minutes.  I have felt a couple of quakes previously in Spain though.

There is a lot of damage in Lorca, and the latest estimate is 8 dead and 165 injured, although sniffer dogs are still searching for people unaccounted for.  The hospital had to be evacuated, as it was damaged, and people were wheeled out into the street by relatives, still clutching drips.

Glad your fine Kathy.

When my dad was growing up in Italy he said  he slept through an earthquake as a small boy! Everyone was up though and the animals were so alert to something going on. Funny.

Yes, the animals go beserk in Bucharest before an earthquake as well.
