Cyclocross 2014

Time for this thread again Very Happy

It will be interesting to see how the Dutch tyros Lars van der Haar and young van der Poel progress this season, and if Nys can continue to rail against Father Time (I suppose having Leinders as a special friend might help in that regard).  So chat, streams and vids here for the cold winter months...

First bit of CX news worth noting is that Cookson has rewarded Mike Plant for his support with the 'cross presidency...

The Juliper, Gluhwein, Hot Dog and Stupid Hat competition is in Hoogerheide next February.  Bartali will probably be busy attending six-days but if anyone else fancies it nearer the time the Worlds is alot of good silly fun...

And it's time for me to state the bleeding obvious again: Cycling is good. Running is good. Running carrying a bike is plain daft!
gerry12ie

Looks like Van der Haar will do just fine Gerry, he might even take the World Cup opener... Wink

Apparently catching an interview with the legend Nys last week, he commented about youtube streaming the races live? Sounds like a leap forward that the Roadies could learn a thing or two from…

VDH.. what a talent.
Is that a Rabo cyclocross skinsuit?
Biosphere

Just came here to post that link. Didn't know it was live on the interweb yesterday. Shall be a welcome distraction when winter gets going properly.

In the link the women's race starts at about 00:15:00 mins and is over approximately 3 minutes and 10 seconds later Wink Men's preamble starts at about 01:36:30 into the feed.

Boogie, the UCI are giving it away to try to grow the sport. I guess about the only thing they would give away from the road stable is Bejing. The sales of the worlds TV week is their biggest earner so that will not be free any time soon (the worlds TTT event was apparently introduced for the TV revenue it would bring in).

Unfortunately, there is no cyclo cross on Mrs. Bio's family farm this year, so I wont be seeing Mourey going for a hat trick of wins over the likes of Zahner in a weekend or two. The organiser was apparently having trouble getting volunteers to help out. That said I had emailed him the photos I took last year and said he was free to use them for promotion etc. and he never even acknowledged my email, so I'm not sure how hard he tried to get volunteers. He also sold his local bike shop in February this year so I suspect he's a lot less motivated to be a mover and shaker on the organising front. Oh well.

Sounds like a project for you Bio???????  Wink

I thought you might say that... Wink

I started watching last night as I was typing so hadn't seen much of the race. Now that I have . . .  Yes . . .  A bit of a beast indeed. On the other hand, those dismountings, step climbings and remountings were pretty graceful for a beast Wink

He's looking to the road already

from Rabo to Argos... grrrrrrr... give me a bit of time to get over that, and it might be a good move!

This weeks Cyclocross from a very sunny Tabor. Women's preamble start at 00:05:40 into stream. Men's at 01:35:45.

Have not watched yet.

Ta.  Superb performance by Van der Haar again, he looks very accomplished.  Shame Mourey didn't get anything out of the race.  It will be interesting to see how VDH goes when it gets heavier but so far he looks super cool.

Vantournot won the Superprestige today, Nys second and Mueesen third.  VDH fourth.
gerry12ie

Nys was going for his 10th Koppenbergcross on Friday but could only watch on as Meeusen, Pauwels and Vantournot filled the podium.  However, Nys won yesterday in the Zondhoven sand pit edging out Albert in a repeat of last years result.

I enjoyed watching this the the other evening - a proper mudfest Koppenbergcross from 2008

The sand yesterday looked disgusting... I was surprised how well Nys and Albert fought back from the dead after being quite a few places and plenty of seconds down at one point after the initial move from vdHaar and Vantournot

Rather hilarious promo video for the Worlds at Hoogerheide.  I have no idea what the Spanish Inquisition has to do with cyclocross but I'm sure someone in a coffee shop will be able to explain...

Hehehe - no-one expects the Spanish Inquisition!

Holland was ruled by the Spanish.
The Spanish Armada left Spain to collect their army from Holland but Francis Drake put an end to that by chasing the fleet up the North Sea away from Holland.
The Bosch (Square Heads with spikes) left Holland Neutral in WW1.

I'll get my coat.

The Sven Nys mud-eating machine seems to tipping along nicely at the moment with a double at the weekend.  He outsprinted Albert and Vantournot in Saturday's GP Hasselt and then rode away from Walsleben in the final sector of the Gavere Superprestige yesterday.  Mr. Superprestige now leads the overall in that competition and is not making the sub-editors job at CN any easier...

On Sunday the riders head to Asper-Gavere for the prestigious Superprestige race.

Chalk up another 2 UK bike titles for the James gang.
Yesterday, Megan won the U 14 by 2 minutes.
She may be the youngest, but potentially her star quality shines the brightest of all.

Today, Ffion (now on the Olympic development programme squad for MTB) won the UK junior cyclocross title while finishing on the podium of the senior race.
Amazing for someone who turned 16, this past Christmas week.

Nice!!! Smile  Good work the James Gang

No report as such, but Ffion makes Cyclingnews results:

Good stuff Huw - you've got a cycling dynasty going on there!  Like Bart's 'James Gang' Smile

Ta for a good laugh this morning Bart.

It's getting boring now Huw Wink Impressive as always. Congratulations.

Aerts took the Juniors title for Belgium - their first at that level for a while and of course Machianne Vos took her seventh in a row by over a minute.  Helen Wyman bagged a bronze.

I have been studying hard and have only seen a couple of races this season so I can't predict much for tomorrow.  The races have been shared around much more this season and it seems that there might be 4 or 5 in with a real good chance which should make for a cagey affair.  Albert has win big on this course before so he is my FP for the big one and Van Der Poel is a shoo-in for the U23.

Live on the Youtube UCI channel as well  Smile
Biosphere

Elite Mens WC on YouTube at the moment.  I'm catching up. Lap 1 just ended and Mourey has forced the pace again. Stybar attacking off the front now. It's a race from the start Smile
gerry12ie

Well that was a brilliant race.  The two best riders in the last number of years slugged it out toe-to-toe for half the race.  Two or three times in the last couple of laps it looked like Nys would break Stybie but in the end Stybar got his third title.

Super stuff, but a shame to hear the Dutch booing Van Aert and the other Belgian riders in the U23.  Wasn't really his fault their boy didn't turn up...
Biosphere

Just finished. That was cracking. Stybar is s horse of a man to basically take a long weekend out of his road schedule and pick up a world's title. Recommended viewing even with knowing the result. Now to try to squeeze in the second half of the Rugby.

Only an idiot would have picked tomorrow to move house  Embarassed  Rolling Eyes  Wink
gerry12ie

With Stybar showing that kind of form, the early spring classics look tasty already.  OPQS have some hand this season with Cav, Petacchi, Renshaw and Meersman for the sprints, Stybar, Kwiatkowski and Boonen for the cobbles, and Uran for the Ardennes.

Tony Martin might do well in the TTs Wink
