Thank you, Slapshot - very useful for me as well!

Slapshot!  Help!

This is not a new member ! this is Kathy.  I have been having dreadful problems with my PC, and am using an ancient slow machine which I have to keep restarting.  I keep losing my saved passwords.  JC does not recognise my ID7password any more, so I can't log in as Kathy.  Can you sort this for me please?  I don't know why it happens - it did happen once before and Berg sorted it.

TIA
kathy

kathy is back!  Thank you, Berck.  Hopefully my PC will be fixed by this afternoon, then I will start looking at the Smarauder Trophy.
MAILLOT JAUNE

Welcome back, as yourself, kathy!

Computer problems - vey frustrating. Hope you manage to get it sorted.
TNG

Kathy,

Don't want to clog up this thread with PC problems, so when you have your PC fixed and you are ready to discuss further you might like to open up a thread in the Coffee Lounge and we can talk about backing up and restoring all your Firefox settings so that hopefully your recent JC logon problems might be circumvented in future...
kathy

The 2010 season thread has stretched out to be much wider than the screen.  Any idea why????  So has this thread. Confused  Confused

That's a new one on me Bio, If i'd been making changes then fine could understand if something wasn't right but I haven't started yet....I'll check your settings make sure they are as they should be.

EDIT : everything looks okay within your profile, certainly no different to anyone elses, I'll dig further with MFF see what I can find out
kathy

Just curious - how are the 'Popular Topics' on the LHS of the page selected?  Are they sort of random or does Admin have some say?  Because there seem to be a lot of 2009 topics there that are over and done with.
SlowRower

Kathy - Are they just the all-time most posted to threads?
kathy

Don't think so, or the Doping News thread would be there permanently Laughing
Slapshot 3

I think it's random though must admit I haven't checked
kathy

I can't post attachments this afternoon ie the FP tables.  When I click on 'Upload File' it waits for a while and then says 'Error'???

I'm seeing the stall too. I just tried to upload a file and it just hung there. I haven't done anything with the site, and I bet Slapshot hasn't either. I'm wondering if its MFF issue?
Slapshot 3

MFF issue I can't add any tables either leave it with me but likely tomorrow before I get a response, keep trying Kathy
Slapshot 3

kathy et al
it would appear that MFF had some upgrades done recently that have not worked as well as anticipated. It's basically screwed the gallery for now. However it should have been repaired and should be working again soon.

Edit: Quick check.....

yup looks good  Very Happy  Very Happy
kathy

thanks, Slapshot, all working fine again now.
mr shifter

I raised this question last year or so.

The "Popular Topics" that are constantly prominently shown on each page.
They relate to nothing on this Forum that is up to date and are not on our popularity list.
A Hate topic list is more appropriate with what seems as only 3 Items that could qualify as being popular so far this year.
The Bias of this list is is obviously from the geeks in the US. (who must be MFF)

PS....I worded that to avoid the expression "at this moment in time" which is a ludicrous statement for saying "NOW" or even "just at the moment".
Mrs John Murphy

I think it is related to number of views. Generally the topics drop down/vanish after about a year 18 months of their initially being posted.
mr shifter

Mrs John Murphy wrote:

I did that last year and found some very low scores and no apparent reason to be there except the bias I mentioned.

From all I can find it's a random part of the styling on the forum front page. I've had a number of digs at trying to find how to switch it on or off but as it hasn't changed in ages, I wonder if it's something we've done since the switch with Berg, i'll maybe activate the other profile for a while just to look and see if that updates it.
Slapshot 3

Dear all,

You'll see a more up to date set of lists on the left frame of the front page. It's all Berck's work (thanks mate!!), my digging just left me confused however a new Shell website i'm building at the minute has the just cycling sticky threads on it just now........... Rolling Eyes

EDIT:
Hard to say what is going on. I haven't seen the problem yet.
kathy

I got a funny error message a couple of times last night when I tried to open certain threads - it was OK on others.  Soon resolved itself though.
Slapshot 3

Biggest problem with the board support is that unless I can replicate the error and send them a link they can't diagnose whether we have an error or whether the error is a general MFF error. If you have any issues, take a copy of the link and send me it

It happened several times again earlier on tonight, but it's OK now.  Pages have been very slow to load at times though - they're usually instant.
Slapshot 3

IMPORTANT FORUM DOWN TIME NOTICE

The Forums will be offline for a couple of hours this morning commencing 0600BST for maintenance, hopefully MFF will get some of the issues we've all seen recently sorted and get back up and running quickly.

Cheers

Donald
Mrs John Murphy

Is it me or has the forum been slow loading today?
kathy

It was slow yesterday, but OK today.
Fontfroide

Been a bit slow lately, but I thought it was my connection not the forum.  So many things to go wrong, so little time to fix them.
Slapshot 3

I threw a message to the board hosts but nothing heard I'm afraid, it has been very slow loading, I think the problem appears to be getting through the ad-bots...
berck

I haven't noticed anything, but I haven't been on a whole lot today.

I wonder if the AD Block Plus is helping?
Slapshot 3

It's certainly cleaner and quicker this morning, see what happens
Biosphere

I've been on a 3G dongle since the start of October and have felt the forum is considerably slower than other parts of the internet but put it down to the MYFF bods not having the fastest server connection in the world.

That said there does seem to be lots of activity in the status bar whenever I load a page and I don't know if a decent ADSL connection masks problems. It's perhaps a bit quicker tonight, but subjective imaginations can be deceptive.
Slapshot 3

There appears to be a new feature on the forums where certain words are underlined in blue. Mousing over these lines hyperlinks into a encyclopedia of sorts, haven't found any consistency across the threads yet but we'll see what happens. If it causes any problems far anyone let us know.
Mrs John Murphy

I don't get it. I am on firefox with no script and ad block plus activated.
Slapshot 3

Mrs John Murphy wrote:

Me too, but I've seen it a few times, page three of this thread had some of this stuff at the top, Fort William and Cowdenbeath were "tagged"!!
berck

I have ad block plus activated, but not 'no script'. I've seen it with every browser I've tested.
Slapshot 3

If you mouse over the link it picks up the encyclopedia if you double click it takes you to a MYFF home page as an embeded advert....I'll do more digging
Ralphnorman

Recently the load times for the pages are exceptionally slow, any maintenance going on or is it my connection?
MAILLOT JAUNE

I've not had a problem with slow loading.
Slapshot 3

Just had a look at some diagnostics in here (work) Ralph and page load times are less than half a second. I suspect it could be your connection.
kathy

no problems here, Ralph.
Mrs John Murphy

I'm seeing the same thing. The only difference in my setup is I DON'T have No Script. I suspect that the MFF have changed something to detect the ABP. I noticed this the other a few weeks ago on another site. I'll send something to ABP.
HuwB

Yes, the same message is giving me grief.
It took half a dozen attempts to post this reply.
Mrs John Murphy

Huw, I scroll back and try again. Seems to be a MFF thing to get us to swithc ABP off.
Slapshot 3

Sorry gang been pretty busy in work today, other thn blocking out a couple of spammer haven't had much chance to look at this. At a glance I think you are on the right tracks with the Ad Blockers but how we get round it I don't know. The joys of Free Forum Boards!!
berck

I just looked around on MFF.org, and yes, they turned on a feature to get us to turn off ABP. Turns out this is causing some other problems because a few of the ads are not loading correctly.

I reported the issue to ABP, so I wonder if they will provide a work around. As of now, ABP needs to be disabled on all MFF forums or you'll see the dreaded error page...
Mrs John Murphy

I just find going back and reloading works for me.

If MFF are going to take this position regarding ABP then perhaps it would be worth looking at another board/software?

Problem is that a lot of the free forum hosts are heading this way to pay for upgrades and the like. The second site I built is now dead because there was no traffic on it but it would only take an hour to do something. BIG problem is it would be verging on impossible to transfer this site to another free host!!

Edit....... I've asked some questions.

I just reloaded the forum index, then the cycling forum, then this thread and finally post reply.

I asked some question of the support people ref moving this forum onto better software that would give us more options for things like pop up blockers, ad blockers, that sort of thing.

Basic answer is we're stuck with this. Content from here cannot be merged into another template because its based on PHPBB2 type templates, protocols and software, it's too old. There are new formats on this group but we would be unable to merge this content.

Ad blocker issues are everywhere, I built another forum last night for a support group Mrs Slapshot helps and its the same there. You can buy the add-on to block ads among other things.

It really is up to members what you want to do but the key is, it looks like lose everything that's on here.

Don't know mate, I can't reproduce the problem either, firefox on Vista Home premium Adblocker is on. However, If people are having issues we need to look at all options to resolve their problems.
Biosphere

Fair enough. I thought everyone was having trouble.
Mrs John Murphy

Well I'm on XP. Maybe Huw/Berck can confirm what OS they are on and perhaps others who have been having this problem.

As I say it is intermittent - so sometimes I'll be pinged back 5 times in a row, and others it will be fine for ages.

The main concern is obviously for new users, etc who come back and the first thing that happens to them is they get the message and think the site is dead.
berck

Out of interest, has anyone tried Chrome as a solution? Safari? Opera?
Mrs John Murphy

Does chrome have ABP etc?
TNG

Just tried Chrome, same intermittent problem. Interesting thing though, AFAIK I've never installed any plug-ins so any ad-blocking must be inherent (which I find surprising given Google's entire existence is predicated on advertising). The thing is, with Firefox at least I have the option to disable ad-blocking on the JC site, not sure how I would be able to do that with Chrome which if correct is going to seriously piss-off any Chrome users (and I see that their market share is up to 14%, so there's got to be at least ONE JC member using it.....).

Just about

http://adblockplus.org/releases/

But I wasn't sure it was actually an ad block problem based on what Berck said a while back

Which perhaps ties in with what TNG has just found

Apologies, just done a bit of digging into my setup and I find that there IS an adblocker installed (don't remember doing it, must have been many months ago when I first installed Chrome). Old age again! Rolling Eyes

So, it would seem the problem IS related to ad-blocking software....unless you're Irish of course!  Laughing
TNG

Out of curiosity, I just disabled the ad-blocking (in Firefox) just for the JC site, and sure enough the Page Errors seem to have disappeared. But I'm a little surprised at how much slower page loading becomes now, delays with the ad server I guess. Not fun either way, with or without ABP.....

SS, you sure you can't get us onto another site? Over at the Lightroom Forums we've just switched hosting software to vBulletin, and the intrepid admins managed to get everything moved over.

no archive stuff what we wrote before = no reason to join here before elsewhere

(older macosx - latest firefox - custom built *plonk* the annoying stuff as it's encountered abp list - no problem, albeit not frequent recent posting)
Biosphere

I've got it bad now. Mad

Firefox just stuck on an seemingly endless ad loading loop. Refuses to play ball after several restarts. Have had to download Chrome which seems to be working fine though.

Playing around and no adverts on here with Chrome - I definitely didn't install any blocking SW in to Chrome.

It's quite strange...I definitely don't remember installing the adblocker, but it's there. On my desktop, it's not there and I get ads.

Check your settings: Spanner>Tools>Extensions.....would be interested to know what you find.
kathy

Until today, I've had no problems.  But now I can't access JC using Firefox - I just had a permanent flashing message about transferring data from ads something or other - too fast to read properly!

I'm now using Chrome, but I've still got the flashing message, although I have managed to get in here.

Boo... No extensions installed Sad

I've only downloaded a few hours ago so I knew I installed nothing

SS, Berck

Looks like Kathy and myself are stuck in the same ad loading loop in Firefox. Mine's been stuck for 90 mins now. Toggling between these two add loading states according to the status bar

My Chrome status bar is dormant though, so I seem to be in a better state than Kathy. Since there are no ads, it looks like the MyFF ad server is broken/offline and is taking the forum with it. Or else the UCI Livestrong complex has launched a DDoS attack Wink

Internet Explorer is better than FF, but still flaky.
TNG

Well I've temporarily bowed to the power of the ads and turned ABP off for JC only....makes page loading a bit slower but at least it's a stable system.

And you're still not seeing ads in Chrome, Bio? Surely you must be truly blessed.....suggest you buy that lottery ticket today!  Very Happy

None whatsoever, and I've being going in and out of threads across the whole site trying to provoke them into making an appearance Laughing
