Athletics

Amazing watching Jessica Ennis winning the 'Heptathalon and Usain Bolt winning 100m - he even seemed to slow down -boy, he can go so much faster!
Biosphere

Looking at the results in the 100m, it's not going to be long before a final in which all 8 run under 10s  Shocked
kathy

I don't usually watch much athletics, but I was glued to this tonight.  Jessica Ennis looked so happy about her gold medal after the problems she'd had last year.

So South Africa have a bloke running in drag?
Beasley

TT will do anything for a medal...

I mean, he's even prepared to race for South Africa! Laughing

The perpetual showing of the semi-final, which was the her v. Jenny Meadows, doesn't particularly help! The IAAF have been suspicious for a while by the sound of it. Crap timing, never the less.

These Jamaicans are flying, they just won the women's 100m hurdles.
Bartali

Nice silver for Meadows ... well it will be soon!!!  Rolling Eyes
bianchigirl

I actually think the controversy with the South African athlete has been really badly handled - if she'd been doping we wouldn't have heard about it until after the positive test. There's a lot of prurience involved in this and I actually agree with Denise Lewis - underlying this there are certain ideas about what women are 'supposed' to look like. Don't see anyone questioning the Canadian silver medallist in the hurdles whose a very similar build, but she has the advantage of looking quite 'feminine'

Ennis was fantastic - loved the way she actually raced the 800m at the end of her event

one of two things that had got my eye on the irish times website full story - http://www.irishtimes.com/sports/other/2009/0819/1224252939949.html

Sprinters pulled from Jamaican team

Athletics: Five Jamaican track and field athletes expected to run in the 4x100 and 4x400 metres relays at the World Championships have been pulled off the team.

Sprinters Yohan Blake, Marvin Anderson and Sheri-Ann Brooks as well as Allodin Fothergill and Lansford Spence had tested positive for the stimulant methylxanthine but were allowed to race by the IAAF pending an appeal.
Beasley

By the sound of it, the IAAF have been on about this for a while. They haven't cooked the story up over the past few hours, the gender verification procedure is particularly complex; it isn't a case of "drop ya slacks, love", even once they have the results it's up for discussion.

She's only been on the radar since the African Juniors, which occurred a month ago. Her PB has dropped five seconds in that time.

The issue hasn't been sensitively handled.

Athletics doing a good job at making cycling look well run and credible. What a joke, doping completely out of control and now blokes running in the women's races. Athletics is dead.

Bloke born without a todger simple as. Put him in the men's race. SA Ath Fed are a bunch of clowns, and the IAAF are just as bad.

It's good that athletics has such a broad base but it does give a few problems sometimes with people not in the western medicalised communities. For example how to classify junior runners when they don't have birth certificates and noone actually knows how old they are. And now this intersex person that has never had their condition diagnosed.

Please don't flame me but this does raise interesting questions.  What is a women and what is a man?  If the speculation is true then should she/he run as a women, a man, or even in the para-olympics ... but even then there would still be the gender question?
kathy

I thought it was a question of chromosomes - some of the articles linked seem to overcomplicate matters.  Looking at someone's genitalia doesn't help, I'm afraid.

Unfortunately some people are born with the 'wrong' genitalia.  I believe there are operations that can correct this.  I just feel rather sorry for the unfortunate runner, because I think he/she is being exploited.
Bartali

Agreed 100% Kathy - but assuming she doesn't want an op (and assuming the speculation is true) what does she run as?
cardinal guzman

Her gender is quite clearly female. Whether she is biologically more man than woman will still be an issue of conjecture after the tests.

The IAAF needs to be dismantled for this.  Even if she proves to be ineligible to run in womens races, she will have a watertight case to sue the IAAF and the SAF for personal injury as a result of the way this has been handled and I hope she does - the fucking scumbags and their arbitrary political decisions.

Should have been sorted 3 years ago behind closed doors.
Bartali

I'll go along with that Cardinal ... well said.

Um, not really, I've seen her in interviews and if someone had not said she was female I'd have assumed she was male.  Some are so quick to judge Lance as guilty without any physical evidence and just as quick to say this person is innocent without waiting for the results of testing.

Cadence,

you may think that 'Gender' refers to whether one is a man or a woman but in fact, it refers to a persons sexual identity or orientation - what you'd assume of the person is not relevant. I stopped reading after the word 'Lance'. Smile

that's an excellent question and one i cannot answer

there are so many description like androgynous, agender, intersexed, transgender.

there's a test on the bbc website to see what your brain i.d. is and i have taken it and been in the female section (slightly only)

i am on another internet forum where there's a gender discussion subforum on it (one of the topics on it was about female hormone supplement and cycling - apparently it's a source of potassium. i use to get potassium and phosphorous mixed up )

and according to http://www.thelocal.se/20232/20090623/ parents in sweden kept a 2 year old's gender secret!!!

as for transgendered cyclists michelle dumaresq is one http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michelle_Dumaresq

Lance  Cool

Does this mean if I consider my Gender to be female I can compete with women, hell, I could've turned pro and didn’t even know it.... Smile

Seriously, If we are going to separate the sexes in competition I think it had better be on ones physical Gender and not Social.....I don’t think that’s what your insinuating but not sure how she/he can be defended until the physical sex is known.  If it turns out she is a women then many people will look very foolish.

Tests have revealed Caster Semenya's testosterone level to be three times higher than those normally expected in a female sample, BBC Sport understands.

Analysis prior to the World Athletics Championships and the 18-year-old's big improvement prompted calls for a gender test from the sport's governing body.

It was made public only hours before the South African, who has been backed by her nation, won the 800m in Berlin.

A high level of the hormone does not always equate to a failed drugs test.

But the news will only increase speculation surrounding Semenya, who arrived back in South Africa to a rapturous welcome on Tuesday.

Much more testing to be done according to the article.  The testosterone results were leaked when the report was faxed to the wrong place...another screw up in the handling of this situation.
