Andy Schleck

I don't know about you but it's hard not to feel for him.  He was DNF at Amstel (ok he crashed) and was shelled out today before they even got to the Mur and came in at 4'35".  It's almost impossible to recognise him as the same rider that was second here and went on to win LBL only four years ago.  He has four young rider GT jerseys, an 'official' TDF, a monument, and narrowly lost two KOMs - yet has the look of a rider who might never win another race.  I actually felt uncomfortable looking at him today as only two years ago I was on the Mur and it seemed like half of Luxembourg had come across to support him.  He looks to be in a bad and lonely place and he surely has a big decision to make fairly soon.

If he was a racehorse, the decision would be made for him...

Well at one point when the cameras cut to him he was seemingly laughing and joking in the arse of the peloton (well that's the mental translation I always make for that on-screen graphic). Hard to say how he really feels about being out there these days. The RS mood music of the last few weeks is that he's making progress, but this season may be about building a base.

Generally, I think he gets a hard time needlessly although he brought some some of it on himself, but nevertheless I still smiled about German TV saying if he was still within range of cameras towards then end then it had been an easy day. Would rather see him back as a contender sooner rather than later.

Sorry, but I've never warmed to either of the Schleck's - probably favour their father more - just wondering if they've stopped taking whatever illegal "preparations" they were on and it's now being reflected in their results.

I think I'm just getting more and more cynical as time goes on. What was it they called the Tour de France in 1968? The  Tour of Health or something like that????
I love the sport, the history etc but ...................
Bartali

I'm afraid I'm with MJ on this one ... he's never been the same since Bruyneel turned the tap off.
maffy

i also think the bro's are spish as anything on a carbocycle, but with riis rather than bruyneel.

in the run-up to the penultimate muur he looked half decent, and only later did he laugh off the back.
did break his hip or whatever last year in that itt, so his excuses are at least as plausible as larry's.

comeback if ever depends on sponsors willing to invest in clean him and the sport of courageous professional suitcase carrying-around.

Never liked them, just not the kind of rider I favour.

Frankie's gynelogical problems with Fuentes then his positive and his 1 yr get out of jail nearly free card have done nothing to change that.

I do kind of feel sorry for where Andy is right now but unless he can pull his own finger out he's finished. You can find any amount of psychologists to try and help him mentally but only he can ride the bike. He obviously don't have anything close to the same preparation as he's had in the past and I just don't see him anywhere close to the rider he was, I don't think he ever will be either. I don't have any problem with that he doesn't animate the sport the way pro's should, I won't miss him if he goes.

I'll post this here rather than on the Ardennes thread as he's not going to have much to do with the race on Sunday.

Just to join in, although I have to admit I don't care that much about the Schlecks.  Never have had that slight positive feeling you can have about a rider, for either of them.  Obviously both of them are more than journeymen riders, and they have livened up many races.  No idea if they doped, but probably they did.  shame about the injuries, but it happens to everyone sooner or later.  I do remember shouting at Andy on the screen on a number of occasions.  "Ride the bike, don't keep looking for your brother."  I guess for some reason I get really fed up about that, no idea why.  Never thought much about the rich Luxembourg real estate dealer, old pal of Johnny, who started a new team to support the Schlecks.  Rich guys investing in cycling, and sports in general is quite normal, no matter what I might think.

Overall, I still don't care too much.  Bit of a shame.  If I knew them, maybe it would be different, but they are just some cyclists that came and went.  Very good, but not great.  I like the new climbers we are seeing anyway, they can replace him in my heart with no trouble.

Andy made such an impressive start with a 2nd in the Giro and then FF's comment above is much about what we all said.
For me he became a clown at the bottom of Alpe D'Huez when Sastre looked at his team mates poncing about and probably said "that's OK you keep playing about but I'm off to ride this mountain my way" and "you can come if you wish"
Any respect I had did finally fade when he tried to change to the "Big Ring" while standing out of the saddle and then blamed others for being a pratt.

I wish him well though for coming back and being able to still ride with the Pro teams and in time, he might yet get back to show the talent he had at the beginning.

And yet you are a Cuntador fan...

Andy Schleck - Andy Shit more like.

While Dertie Cont would sell his own grandmother for a blood bag and a win, Schleck would do the same, but only if he can cross the line holding hands with Frank. Seriously, the boy needs therapy.

Yup, like Pantani, Kelly, Anquetil etc etc whateve it's issues, I can't stop being a fan of the sport.... it's that simple, call e a hypocrit if you like, its been said before and no doubt will again
Mrs John Murphy

I don't see how you can use doping as a reason to condemn one rider while ignoring the doping of your preferred riders.

You say about Schleck's ban being a slap on the wrist - what about Dertie's 6 month ban?

Comeon, there are lots of reasons to hate Andy Schleck, but those are pretty weak.

Read the first line of my post again. It's as simple as that.

Six month ban......yeah some six months riding he had that he managed to lose two GTs and whole bunch of other wins in that "six months"..... mind you, pointless Schleck the Elder didn't have any wins to lose did he.

If his year was a fair application of the rules of the sport the I'll eat my own arse!

I like and have always liked a specific kind of rider, people like the Shlecks are a pointless waste of an incredible talent; that in itself is a good reason as any to dislike them

Can't be arsed with a fight about it, far more important things to do.
Mrs John Murphy

Wasted talent is reason enough - but the other reasons were pretty specious and hypocritical.

What you ignore is that Dertie was protected by his mates in the Spanish fed again, he's gone unpunished for Puerto, unpunished for doping at Disco (2007), the Cera Giro, unpunished for doping at Astana. Was Schleck protected - of course, but no more so than Dertie, Wiggins or anyother golden boy has been over the years. Did the UCI advise Schleck of potential excuses?

Would you like salt and pepper with your meal?

It's four legs good, two legs bad all over. Dertie good, Schleck bad. And frankly that's bullshit.

The thing with Schleck is that he disappoints so many people. He is someone who clearly has the talent but has neither the application, nor the desire. With him it is not a physical issue but a mental issue.

and to think that Sastray did it while riding clean, that is the real talent. that must be one of the cleanest podium ever with Sastray and Evans riding totally clean
