theoretically less sagan than usual.
Boogerd_Fan

Wiggins appears the most quality GC rider - but that's based on 2-3 years history rather than current form.. could Ten Dam get a GC victory to please the Belkin sponsors? I think he is best of the rest.. Stetina will probably have 1 day of bad luck..

Sagan has company for the sprints.. but i expect him to try something on stages 4, 5 or 7 anyway.

Even Sagan seems less Sagan than usual at the moment.

I have kicked off an FP thread here

As kathy asked on the fp thread, it is early this year though thats because the european calendar is a week later this year than usual.

UK Eurosport managed to miss them for the women's tour.
I'd been watching the tracker, thought nothing was going to happen, so waited for tv to start.
Boogerd_Fan

that was Matt Stephens with Brian Smith Wink

looks like his cameo in the classics earned him a shot at the hot seat for ATOC.

Good for him too... maybe a bit monotone in some places, but certainly able to comment about what he is seeing in front of him unlike Kirby & the rest.
HuwB

Cav just managing just to pip Giant's number 2 sprinter does not bode well for him to beat Team Germany at the TDF.

It was after the finishing line, which the commentators took rather a while to spot.

In a strange turn of events, a Trek Factory Racing rider collided with Belkinís GC captain Laurens Ten Dam beyond the finish, causing the Dutchman to fall heavily. Ten Dam rode away from the scene under his own power, but appeared shaken up following the incident.

Going to be a long night. 76kms covered at less than a 33kph average.
The first big climb well behind them and it's been slightly downhill for quite a ways.

Timezones and employment have scuppered me this year. I see the late rush for a TTer had the right idea, but picked the wrong one. I will watch video this evening.

I watched it to the end, but lying down!
Wiggins did all he could to control the attacks on that low gradient drag, but
once it ramped up, he was toast.
His lead now looks precarious.
Under threat from another track pursuit rider, too.
Biosphere

Last night should motivate the other teams to have a go when they can over the remaining stages.

HuwB wrote:

Indeed. Dennis is clearly doped to the eyeballs. Pursuiters can't climb. This fact was brought down on the Tablets of Stone. Or have I spent too much time in The Clinic? Smile

Whatever faults Wiggo has, he just looks superb on a bike. He did apparently change position on his saddle once in the TT, so his standards are maybe slipping.
Slapshot 3

I couldn't believe how still he was in the saddle, it did look graceful. Just emphasises how crap Froome looks on a bike!!

Nah, it was bollox that I didn't understand the CN live review.
There were 8 men in the break and I then realised that CN's 10 (without time gaps) meant that those two Sky's were on the front of peloton as they crossed the Hamilton prime.

I was watching the live ES programe and fell asleep. (too much medication makes one drowsy)
Wiggins reminded me of Big Mig who could grind the peloton to having one or a very small group left to out sprint him for the win but 20 secs is a bit much to loose for all that effort.
Hope SKY learn the lesson to let Garmin do the attacking next time.  Exclamation

In the land of the blind the one eyed man is king!
HuwB

Live now with the pretty coastal stage that they do.
Unfortunately, there's still 85 kms to go...........................
gerry12ie

There's the proof that radios kill racing.  What should have been a dull sprint at the end of a long, straight, pretty road turned out to be a quirky flat win for the KOM as the peloton rocket scientists messed up the timing.  To add insult to sprinter injury the camera panned away just as the sprint for seventh kicked off Very Happy

I gave up on it last night, because I knew I could catch the end, this morning.
Turns out I was wrong. Laughing
What were they thinking?
8 years in and the tv coverage is still amateurish.

That break was never coming back, probably with or without accurate GPS graphics.

Apparently Wiggins gained 4 seconds on the GC due to a bunch split.
Fontfroide

Went to bed early last night, but it looks like I might have missed, for me, a slightly interesting stage.  One of those classic will they won't they, "the peloton decides" type of stages.  Sorry I missed it.  Think I will read one or two accounts.  Life seems seriously full right now, and sometimes I just can't stay up past midnight.

Smile

It's interesting how one climb can generate such different views in various other forums.

At one end of the scale, some folk think Wiggo is now in the form to challenge Froome at the Tour, whereas at the other, some folk think he's shown he's not even worthy of selection for the Tour squad.

I guess that's the beauty/frustration of road racing - assessing the absolute quality of a performance is very difficult given the variability of particular courses, or even the same course from one day to the next due to weather.

With track cycling or track running, you've got much more to go on to estimate competitors' form.

poor maggie was convinced at dunkers that dangerous teamcars up in the race near the end were a super reason for wirelessness. obviously not taking into account the protection afforded from specific ocean blues.

Hear hear.
The sad DSs can't play Pro Cycling Manager with their computerised teams any more.

Clearly we are being given duff info regarding how far is left to go, but the riders get the physical boards every 5km don't they ?
So that won't be an issue, will it ?
Biosphere

Was surprised by the Diablo stage when I caught up finally. Couldn't believe how late they left it to attack him or did he just blow in sight of the line? I'll doff my cap to him for going to the front for as long as he did to try to control it once he was isolated.

On the subject of smoothness, how could people tell? My picture was start stop for pretty much the whole time Wiggins was working. Have I got a hard drive problem or do the ToC telly people?

If there is a bit of a GC battle tonight, I don't think I could have many complaints about this years edition.

Rounder off with a victory salute that was none of the above.

Funny old race this. Yesterday, we had the bunch splitting, in a sprint for 7th.
Last night, Sagan and Goss seemed to roll over the line for 2nd and 3rd, with the bunch tightly packed on their wheels. Confused

Garmin with no clue tactically again.

but not when they drive the break so hard it never gets caught.

Dennis was the one isolated in the end.

^^ this!!

I expected much from them and they blew it, unless there was something wrong with Rohan Danielson killed that by driving the break so damn hard

Yes.
Eskimo Tom dropped a bomb.

Another Wiggins friendly climb, that.
Not even the sting in the tail like the one from earlier in the week.

First the trees and then the buildings. Almost unwatchable.
Another Cannondale chase, another Cannondale fail.
Lucky some of the other teams were more proficient.
Boogerd_Fan

? ? ? Canondale fail?
Distancing Cav, hofland and degenkolb on the false flat of a climb... descending well to keep the gap and bring back the break.... brought back together they didnt need to drive pelotob... sagan was dropped off at the final corner where he also delivered.

What is your definition of them succeeding?

i think this year's course has been the best yet. last time out on this circuit race (the one with the lake hooses) it was dnf carnage.

did young stetina manage to pee on dz's lawn? was the guy who "won" a lap early yesterday the same chap with the surprisingly decent itt?

shame about the tellypictures...

Seems to have started even earlier than I expected. 25km to go.

7pm cet start for early finish.
I'm at 32 kms to go on record.
The lap, doesn't appear to be the lap.
21 miles but no climb during that run in. Confused

have holidayed regularly in Thousand Oaks (with family) over the past 30 years, so interesting to see familiar places.... race failed to ignite my interest though....
HuwB

I wonder what Pete Sagan was thinking when the OPQS and Argos boys turned up at the front of the bunch?
Pretty much what he was thinking at the finishing line, I expect.
"Who invited these fast flockers to my Californian party?" Smile

Laugh of the week: Eurosport commentators think they spot Thor Hushovd pulling up on the other of the circuit to watch the bunch go by.
5 minutes later, Thor turns up on the same side of the road in the BMC train.
Naughty Thor.CoolLaughing

I rather enjoyed this video.  I have never ridden in a fast bunch, hardly ever even in a bunch these days.  I certainly have never seen a sprint finish from the inside.  This video would also be good to show those not quite keen on cycling, but who have some interest.

Technology can show us things.
