Seems there's a lot going on this week, Gerry.

The new, slimline UCI calendars reveal a decidedly "weekend unfriendly"
look, with races such as The Tour of Switzerland cut to 5 days and a 3 day Tour de Romandie, while the GTs remain unaffected.

http://inrng.com/2013/10/pro-cycling-calendar-uci-reform-2015-2020/

Quote:
Within the next few years races like the Eneco Tour and Tour de Pologne will get downgraded. Germany’s Bayern Rundfahrt gets promoted. Meanwhile Paris-Nice, Tirreno-Adriatico, the Dauphiné and Tour de Suisse all shrink. Other races vanish.

The teams might like it, but it's fan folly if you ask me.
Boogerd_Fan

Romandie is actually 6 days... just overlapping the end of April/start of May.
Biosphere

Be interesting to see how much of this sticks with Cookson in charge since it predates him. Looking at the Inner Ring link and the 'stakeholders' listed, Chassot has had to step down from his position as Swiss Cycling president due to his rigging of the Swiss nomination of McQuaid. Rumpf was McQuaid's man too and Cookson has openly questioned the role of the GCP going forward.

Boogerd_Fan wrote:

Yes, I see I missed that, being rather small.
So, rubbish Romandie 6 days, but the TdS chopped to 5.
I wonder why? Check out the list of those on the selection panel!

Not sure how they can justify promoting the reluctant German's Bayern Rund, while removing all traces of the enthusiastic US and the ToB races.
gerry12ie

RVV has at least listened to criticism of the new route and has increased the number of hills in the closing km.  Still no Muur or Bosberg, and the circuit finish has been scrapped though Oude-Kwaremont twice and Peterberg three times will give it a circuit feel.

Quote:
The result of this makeover is a much more unrelenting finale in terms of the hills the riders will encounter. Now the first climb on the race after just 108km, the Oude Kwaremont is tackled again almost 100km later, followed by a first ascent of the Paterberg. From there the riders continue to the fearsome Koppenberg, which now sits just 45km from home, the closest it has ever been to the finish.

Following it in rapid succession are Steenbeekdries (39km from the finish), the Taaienberg (37km), the Kruisberg (35km), the Oude Kwaremont (17km) and Paterberg (13km).

Boogerd_Fan

How much money does Alonso have? because there were rumours in Gazzetta about offers for JRod and Sagan in his super-team too.
Biosphere

Million a year seems generous if Riis has reduced responsibilities, but I guess it's a component of the overall deal. Tinkov probably reckons he might not have to pay for that long once Denmark anti doping are finished with Riis. Meanwhile Contador can look forward to his quarterly and annual performance reviews being conducted by Twitter.

Confirmed. Tinkoff buys out Bjarne.:

As Huw said, YellowFluo's wildcard entry for the Giro is lucky given Vini's positives last year.  Although its really just another example of Italian races looking after Italian teams (ditto France and Spain).

not a problem for spain this season Sad

looking at cqranking, there is 4 registered spanish teams - movistar, caja rural and the 2 continental teams euskadi and burgos bh

lets look at spain

2014 - 1 - 1 -2 - 4
2013 - 2 - 1 -2 - 5
2012 - 2 - 2- 2 - 6
2011 - 2 - 3 -2 - 7
2010 - 3 - 2 -3 - 8
2009 - 3 - 3 -2 - 8
2008 - 3 - 4 - 2 - 9
2007 - 3 - 4 -4 - 11
2006 - 4 - 5 -5 - 14
2005 - 4 - 3 -4 - 11

the one year with steady overall number saw decrease in quality between 2009 and 2010 as a procontinental team was replaced by a continental team

it will be interesting in france to see if aso give an invite to bretagne. with europcar, fdj and ag2r in the worldtour that means the only 2 french teams for wildcards are cofidis and bretagne so at least 2 other non-french teams could be in it.

3 non-spanish teams will be wildcards for the vuelta though assume cofidis could get one.

overall registrations with the uci (i don't include the continentals in this as those are registered with national bodies)

2014 - 18 - 17 - 35
2013 - 19 - 20 - 39
2012 - 18 - 22 - 40
2011 - 18 - 23 - 41
2010 - 18 - 20 - 38

2 hours of endless ad breaks and Sky chat.

First day of the season and there's a Belkin rider lying in the ditch, just before the kite, as usual!
Great to have racing back.

Kudos to Greipel for making the climb, but the finish was up a drag as well, so no surprise that Gerrans won.

Easily known the season is upon us from the amount of 'it's all about Bradley' articles that Bradley is generating...

Quote:
"That [Tour win] changed everything," said Wiggins. "I left home pretty much unknown and came home the most famous man in the country for that week. It was hard for me and the family. It affected them as well. The Lance Armstrong thing in January ... my kids started getting harassed at school. 'Is your dad on drugs? He won the Tour. Is he the same as Lance Armstrong?'

Quote:
"I kind of felt I won the public over, especially the French public, two years ago," Wiggins said. "It's like the film Gladiator, you win the public and you win your freedom.

"I kind of won my freedom, whereas the opposite happened with Chris if you like. It would be nice to go back to the Tour and, if anything, just take the pressure off Chris a little bit. Take some of those questions for him and challenge people for him."

Quote:
“This is the eighth time I will have done Roubaix,” Wiggins explains. “Now I guess, with Chris as the defending [Tour de France] champion, he carries that burden and that pressure. That almost liberates me a little bit to go: ‘Okay, Brad. We can take a risk with you maybe crashing in Roubaix or whatever.’

Quote:
“That North American market is huge to the team now. They are happy for me to do it, and it gives me another challenge. Cycling over there is huge, and they’ve kind of been robbed of their heroes… you know, with the Lance thing.”

Quote:
“I’d say they will, yeah,” Wiggins reasons. “I’d just like to challenge the people asking those questions a little more. Maybe in a more articulate way than two years ago, when I called them all wankers. I just feel more ready for it now – and more of a responsibility to not shy away from those questions. I am proud to be a winner of the Tour de
France, with no history and no skeletons in the closet. So I’ll challenge people: the real hypocrites of the sport who are asking those questions.

“Even [journalist and former pro] Paul Kimmage, to an extent. Someone summed it up for me: ‘Paul Kimmage: he took drugs, and he was still shit.’ And he has the cheek to challenge us on a daily basis. So it’s a funny old thing.”

Gee Bartali, usually you manage a bit of colour in the post (often green red and white.  Must be busy at work.

Speaking of nationals, I wonder if Huw has seen anything of our wunderkind Ryan Mullen on the track? He retained his U23 TT title with a time considerably quicker than the elite champ and then won the elite RR by over a minute. He's not yet 20 and looks like he might just have it all...

Queen stage tomorrow in the Giro Rosa. The Boss has taken her customary bag full of stages this week and has a comfortable lead so barring a disaster a la 2013, she should take yet another title. Not a stream to be got but the utterly devoted Sarah Connolly updates on twitter and has reviews, previews, vids and interviews over at Podium Cafe.

Emma Pooley takes her second mountain stage and secures QOM but Vos finishes 5th and consolidates her lead. Another Giro Rosa for The Boss

Kennaugh won Tour of Austria.

So, Belkin had until today (the second Tour rest day ) to come up with a sponsor or be consigned to the pro team graveyard......................

It will be interesting to see the fallout of this "relegation" from the big league. I can see Mollema looking to continue in the Protour - because races they target require a better team support than what will be left of Belkin.

I can also imagine as a Pro Conti team, they would be looking to Kelderman and younger generation, where they don't need to throw around big salaries.

Can see someone like ten Dam staying... he won't get a GC gig anywhere else basically. Also vanMarcke is contracted for 2015.. so i guess he will survive at least 1 more year.. but who will support him in the classics?

An I missing something? As I read it, no 'relegation' is taking place, just a sponsor swap?
Bartali

Yeah ... that's how I read it Bio.

what it does say

Quote:
The majority of the budget of the team comes from Lotto, but Plugge reportedly also saved around €2,5 million of the Rabobank money that he received to pay for the contracts that were signed when the bank sponsored the team. He also has Bianchi who, according to Telegraaf, will raise their budget for next year.

The Dutch team still doesn't have a full budget for a WorldTour team but continuity seems guaranteed for 2015. The Dutch holiday company Roompot Vakanties is also still looking for a team in which to invest around one million euros.

I assume that will work like Katusha.. if they fail to show UCI the money, they will be demoted anyway.

In the Commonwealth Games the Australian men's team pursuit dropped a man at the 2 kilo mark yet still had enough in the tank to record a 3-54. Very swift.
