Thanks BG - you have enabled me to do something I've been wanting to do for a long time ... compare Bartali with Merckx, adjusting for the 6 years Bartali lost between 1939 and 1945!
Merckx - points accumulated between ages 20-24 and 32-33 is 5565
Bartali - points accumulated between ages 21-24 and 32-33 is 6089
For fairness, I have not included the 5908 points Bartali accumulated aged 34 and over as Merckx retired at 33.
Means nothing ... but interesting nevertheless! |

Glad to be of help! I'm glad to see Jalabert rated so highly - after all, he is the only rider except Merckx to take all 3 jerseys - overall, points and KoM - in a GT

What I like is that the rankings aren't all about how many times someone won the TdF - except for Merckx there's not a 5+ times winner in that top 5

I found the 1991 TDF to be fascinating...the end of Lemond's run and begginning of Indurain's...Amazing how long the long the Time Trials were back then....Guess they had to shorten them with Indurain killing everybody by 3 minutes or more....lol
One thing about 1991....Lemond lost his grip but he continued to attack and get into breaks....Have to admire a man not going down without a fight.... |

Not sure why this is 'the one that really matters'? Am I missing something?
Also surprised no one has picked up on my point that my namesake is right up there at the top of the pile despite virtually stopping racing between 25 and 31 - prime age for a road cyclist! Same for Coppi, though he will have missed fewer of his prime years as he was a bit younger. Obviously I am a Bartali fan, but even I was suprised that he amassed more points than (say) merckx between the ages of 20 to 24 and 32 to 33.
Sorry ... you are probably all thinking "change the record Bartali"  |

I have a great deal of respect for Bartali - he was helping the Italian resistance to ship out Jewish Italians by transporting documents whilst out training and eventually guiding Jewish refugees to Switzerland himself. This at great personal risk. An extraordinary story.
