Unlike the NRT game the Cobblestone League runs through the year and covers a myriad of World Tour and Pro Conti races through the cycling season. One warning it can be high maintenance.

http://cobblestone.be/

(if possible can one of the Cobblestone regulars write some basic instructions for how the site and game works these days, I don't play Cobblestone.....cheers  Donald)

I am happy to start.  Maffy or Gerry can fill in.  Or disagree.

You pick your team from eleven categories of riders, only one from each category.  The first category is "the top five" or so riders on earth.  How they end up in this category I don't know exactly.  But they might be the top five on some ranking system from the previous year, maybe UCI, maybe another one.  Category Two is the next ten or so, and so on to the last category which is "everyone not in the top ten categories".  You get one and only one ride from each category.  Sprinters, Stage Racers, Puncheurs, all mixed together.

You are allowed to change your team many times during the year.  A quick glance at the Calendar of races for the year, shows you when.  You can change 16 times this season.  Frankly, it is hard work changing teams 16 times, keeping track of deadlines.  Partly because there is often more than one important race during each period, and you have to decide how to distribute riders.  You also have to continually check who exactly is riding which race.  Sometimes when you have a deadline, you have no really accurate idea who exactly is riding a race later during that period, so its hard to pick a good team.  For me this is a negative feature.  Alongside having to pick sixteen different teams sometimes only a week or two apart.

Of course you have to pick well, so if you look at the standings, Maffy chose very well for the Tour Down Under, and Gerry chose pretty well, and I was a disaster.  Even though it was only one race, I still messed up.  Still, seeing how badly or well you do is a feature of any fantasy league.

Points are awarded for the first ten places or so in every stage or every race, with points varying according to the "importance" of the race.  For first place in a Classic, semi classic or "important" one day race gives you 400, 240 and 175 respectively.  You have to compose your team knowing that in the same time period there are races of varying importance.

During one period this year, you have to choose, before Amstel Gold starts, teams for Fleche, Trentino and Paris Roubaix as well.  It is a certainty you won't know which riders are riding in all those races before the Amstel starts.  After the Tour, you have to choose riders for races all the way to the end of August, deadline 26 July.

Hmm, must be something else.  You can check on standings for your teams in Classics, Grand Tours, not so Grand Tours, semi-classics and the other categories at any time during the year.  So if you can't beat Maffy throughout the entire year, you can still whup his ass for a Grand Tour, or the Classics as a whole or even in one race.

There are very few who play from JC, but 376 registered for this year.  About half or so will stick with it all year, week in week out.

Over to the others.

I think you have covered just about everything there, FF.  It was good to see the results updated daily for TDU but the rider lists and teams are still a bit patchy.  The important thing is to keep an eye on the calendar to make sure you prepare your team in time for the switch.

Just checked my team and was pleasantly surprised that I had the foresight to pick both Moser and Kadri who both had excellent weekends.  I was somewhat less pleasant when I realised that Cobblestone didn't include either of the Italian races in their calendar...

Be patient, that will work fine.

The best I can ever do is finish second to Maffy, or as last year, as I recollect, third to Gerry, maybe even fourth.  But it is true, after a totally disastrous team for Tour Down Under (full of sprinters for some reason), I did rather well for the last few days.

I can't even find one rider for two categories in the nest set of races.  Nobody seems any good.

I'm dreading picking for the next set but i do like the homework aspect of it so far.  Cobblestone and FP have forced me to look at teams rosters and try to judge the 'horses for courses' aspect although it's a steep learning curve for me.

When I started some years ago, I found it hard work keeping up.  And like you, I discovered races I didn't even know existed.  Still not very good at picking winners, I blame it on bad memory at my age.  On the other hand, my middle of the pack tendencies on any league of guessers maybe represents my knowledge and skill.  Nice thing about picking is that you are either right or wrong, no debates, you pick it or you don't.  A bit like those quizzes in that sense.  Refreshing side of life, which is mostly full of grey areas and endless unresolved discussions about important things, which are never right or wrong.  Picking who wins a cycle race is simple.

Yes, no grey areas - sink or swim with the picks!  The other thing with Cobblestone is spreading your team picks to cover the races for the period which does narrow things down a bit in there too.  It's good stuff though, homework i can enjoy!
