Just got a new mountain bike 2 weeks ago and I've been riding as much as I can when its not raining too bad.  One thing I've noticed is that the new grips on my handlebars have caused pretty sever irritations on my palms...Is this normal for a new bike and grips or does that indicate I'm leaning forward and downward too much?

You could also try some bar ends so that you can vary your hand position. I really need to get some myself. The straight bars really do limit your options for moving positions and avoiding irritation or even reduced circulation.

Not a fan of bar ends - but each to their own.

It could be that you are putting too much weight through your hands in which case strengthen your core muscles.

You could try ODI Rogue lock on grips (google em) which has never caused me any problems.  Very soft.

I've always had mixed feelings about this. Never really liked putting my hand on them much. I got converted to them when I realized they would have kept me from being knocked off the bike. I relaxed my grip one day and hit a hiddened rock in the road (in was just slightly elevated out of the ground). One hand slid right off the end of the bar. Once that happened, the other hand reflexively pulled on the other end of the bar.

Had the bar end been there, my hand wouldn't have slid off.

I've never really seen the point of them, but that is good reasoning Berck - hope you were not hurt too much!

Well, I didn't break anything, fortunately. Just got the wind knocked out of me, and landed in the softest spot on the trail.

They do make other things like bar ends that are much shorter. There only purpose is to help keep you hands on the bars. I saw these after I put the bar ends on the bike.

SM, are you riding without goves? Could be anything - allergy to dye in bar tape, ulnar irritation, it would all be relieved by a pair of gloves - specialised bg are good and cheap, though I prefer gloves with finger loops for easy removal.

Some people find the Specialized gel pouch irritates their Ulnar anyway.

Do people mean mitts instead of gloves anyway? Isn't that what we should be advising SM to wear at this time of year? I think he'll get sweaty hands in gloves so mitts with the finger hoops would be my choice.
