Do you know team sponsors actually do?

Just looking at the peleton I was thinking about how little I know about the companies that sponsor cycling teams. It makes me wonder what the point of sponsoring a cycling team is:

So a little quiz - without using google. In the current peleton (and some famous historical teams) how many can you identify what the sponsoring company does?

1 CSC
2 Caisse d'Epargne-Illes Balears
3 Rabobank
4 Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team
5 Phonak Hearing Systems
6 Lampre-Fondital
7 T-Mobile Team
8 Gerolsteiner
9 Saunier Duval - Prodir
10 Astana-Würth Team
11 Liquigas
12 Credit Agricole
13 Quick Step - Innergetic
14 Cofidis, le Credit Par Telephone
15 Davitamon-Lotto
16 Ag2r Prevoyance
17 Euskaltel - Euskadi
18 Bouygues Telecom
19 Française des Jeux
20 Team Milram

Others:

Univega Pro Cycling Team
Unibet.com
Barloworld
Domina Vacanze
Saeco
Festina

Of those I can identify

Saeco - coffee machines - and I did think when I was last using one about Mario

Discovery Channel - they are the channel next to Eurosport - they feature Americans with bad hair shouting about stuff and programmes about Yeti.

Phonak - Make hearing aids - only because they had adverts during the TDF telling you that was what they did - plus the team name is pretty explicit.

T-Mobile - Pretty hard to avoid T-Mobile pink. Mobile phones.

4 out of 25. Anyone do any better.

1 CSC
2 Caisse d'Epargne-Illes Balears
3 Rabobank - possibly a bank?
4 Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team
5 Phonak Hearing Systems
6 Lampre-Fondital
7 T-Mobile Team
8 Gerolsteiner
9 Saunier Duval - Prodir
10 Astana-Würth Team - dont they have something to do with watches or navigation equipment?
11 Liquigas - I presume a LPG company?
12 Credit Agricole - farmers bank?
13 Quick Step - Innergetic
14 Cofidis, le Credit Par Telephone
15 Davitamon-Lotto
16 Ag2r Prevoyance
17 Euskaltel - Euskadi
18 Bouygues Telecom - a telecoms company?
19 Française des Jeux
20 Team Milram

I think Saunier Duval do gas boilers...
Rabobank and Caisse d'Epargne are banks...
Liquigas is presumably calor gas type bottles...
Credit Agricole is a bank...
Bouygues Telecom must be telecoms!
Isn't Euskaltel the local government/regional government sponsor?
Don't know what Daviamon is, but Lotto has to be the lottery, surely?

Cycling's biggest market is continental Europe. If you asked someone from France/Spain/Italy, I'm sure they've have a good idea of what most of them do.

They must be great people to talk to at parties...

According to their website - www.saunierduval.com/ they are a heating company. And they even sell to Hungary so if Pantanifan gets a bit chilly then he can call you David 'Verve' Millar and ask him to sort him out with a new boiler.

Prodir make pens www.prodir.com/ all very phallically posed for the camera.

there are a lot of banks and credit companies in there. i know a lot of them, mainly from seeing the TDF where each sponsor has a publicity vehicle in the caravan.

i did think of getting a Quick-Step laminate floor a little while ago.

Mapei make industrial solvents/chemicals, i think.

a few months i was stopped by a man in a suit who was staring at my Euskaltel/Euskadi cap. He asked what is was for and then said he never knew the basque region had its own telecomms company. Seems he was in the industry. So, that bit of advertisisng worked.

Milram is a milk producing collective in europe.

Gerolsteiner is fizzy water.

for me ONCE Eroski is the best team name as it was quoted some where 100% of Spaniards knew ONCE was the Spanish lottery. How many of the current team names as it has already been said could get that kind of market penetration.

Well, thats rather obvious, seeing as they sell tickets for it on more or less every street corner. The thing is, its a charity (not a lottery) for blind people, they raise their money by selling lottery tickets. But its not THE Spanish lottery, there are many. But its the most well known. But hey, 100% of the people in the Netherlands knows that Rabobank is a bank. That must be the best team name aswell then? And so we could go on. One thing I am a bit unsure about though is how many people knew that Eroski was a co-sponsor of the ONCE-Eroski team. The team was well known as it was succesful (especially in Team Time Trials) and had big name riders (like Zulle), and I suppose with everyone knowing about the lottery, it made sense for ONCE to pull the plug on cycling as their objectives had probably been obtained.

CSC is a company we should be aware of in the UK. The NHS signed a contract with them worth £1bn to modernise NHS IT systems, particularly to improve handling of patients medical records. This project is not going well to put it mildly. We are at least a year behind schedule with flase start after false start. To cap it all CSCs partner company iSOFT is in major financial difficulties as a result of the troubles with its NHS work.

I already have a Saunier Duval gas boiler thanks, which is why I listed them as a gas boiler company in my earlier message (the one you dismissed as "guesswork") No need for Millartime in the Pantanifan household then, maybe I'll give me old mate László Bodrogi a call instead (probably cheaper anyway)...

Did you know that in Basque 'eros' is the root of the verb 'erosi', meaning 'to buy / to purchase'. The suffix '-ki' usually means 'derivate of'.

They've also been criticised for having anti-unionization policies (similar to Walmart I guess) and perhaps more sinister, supporting ETA.

You're right about the Deutsche Bank, I forgot about that. I must admit, I didn't know Eroski was a supermarket either.

But going back to your ONCE comment, I'm saying is its not surprising everyone in Spain knew what ONCE was as it was its home market and tickets for the lottery can be bought on pretty much every street corner. Outside of Spain though it was a different matter.

Big Mat-Auber 93
Kelme

Gewiss-Ballan

With the exception of Pantanifan's boiler - does anyone use any products/bought anything because of the cycling connection?

I almost bought a T-Mob phone but decided that Pink wasn't really my colour - and if I want to be associated with fat junkies I'd listen to the Doors.

Has anyone doing some DIY gone for some bolts and thought to themselves 'These wurth nuts are helping to keep Vino and his children in a warm clothes over the winter?'

TVM is insurance, although I haven't heard all that much from them other than their sponsorship of TVM -Farm Frites (potatoes!)
Isn't GAN insurance aswell? Polti are cleaning products. A pity they left cycling, as the sport needs a bit of a clean up.

I haven't gone out and bought anything from a sponsor because they are involved in cycling. I have an account at Rabobank, but that was because it had a good name in the village I first lived in when I moved to the Netherlands (the only other bank was ABN AMRO). I'm pretty sure I've used Wurths nuts/bolts/screws or something, but again, not because they are, or were, involved in cycling but because that is what there was at the time.

"Has cycling sponsorship ever made you more likely to buy a product?"

I don't think advertising/sponsorship actually works like this - I think we all believe we are relatively immune to its effects, but it does create "product awareness". In my case for example, when Mrs PF said I want to buy a Saunier Duval boiler rather than a slightly cheaper Hungarian make, I didn't think "oh great, if it's good enough for Simoni, Millar et al it must be good for me", but probably the fact that I'd heard of the company made me (subconsciously) less likely to complain about the fact that it was more expensive.
I also pay my phone bill to T-Mobile by the way, though am thinking of changing over to another (non-cycling sponsor) operator...

I bought my girlfriend a Festina watch (there was a bad idea) because of the team. I also use Credit-agricole or caisse d'epargne bank machines when am in france due to the teams (sad i know). I drew the line at Linda McCartney foods though...............

Actually, the Linda McCartney thing reminds me - didn't the whole team have to become vegetarian?

Does anyone know of any other 'sponsorship quirks' - is Tom Danielson forced to watch 'World's Wildest Car Chases' on continual loop?

Alan - is she still your girlfriend? Did you tell her that Richard Virenque had inspired you to make this purchase?

Pantanifan - at least you have a boiler...

Naspa, she became my wife, then I came to my senses and undid that............unfortunately I cant link the events to Festina

The Linda McCartney fiasco was hilarious. A cycling team who had to go through an entire season eating her food products. The team was disbanded half way through the season as none of the riders could compete

How about Lucho herrera being forced to drink gallons of Cafe de Colombia........actually now you mention it............

Despite the many cycling-related perks of living in France - ie you could watch cycling on telly, for real in the street, motorists didn't try and kill you on the commute into work etc - one of the horrors was that Richard Virenque advertised 'quick step' laminate flooring on the TV. That muct have been one of clauses of his sponsorship contract.

I did also once see a tv feature about Virenque at home with his 'lovely bride and childhood sweetheart Stephanie' (who is - as they would say in France - 'a tuna') but I didn't notice him using quickstep products chez lui.

They had him popping up in the local supermarket too - Champion - as it's KOM sponsor.

i still have nightmares about his nasty, weasly, little face and whiny voice.
