Who would have thought, corruption seems to be endemic at football's governing body   Wink   Confused

I myself am deeply shocked by these revelations.  I am sure all those guys (no women I guess) could not possibly have allowed their choices and judgements to be coloured by money.  All the fans find the choice of Qatar, with its long history of involvement (AND investment) in football over the last two centuries, very logical.  Why have the World Cup only in countries with football fans and players for a hundred years or more.  Bring the spectacle to the world, allow tiny (AND rich) countries to foot the bill.  Even ones where the highest natural point is 128 metres and they have to air-condition the stadiums.  Why not have it in a country, that is too hot at the normal time to play footie?  Simply change the entire league schedules of everyone else in the world.  Frankly, the idea that there could be corruption in the beautiful game shocks and appalls me.

At least we don't have to worry about doping in football - it's a very clean sport and taking drugs can't help you score a goal, etc., etc.  Wink

This guy is good.  Thanks.

It still is a slight puzzle to me that two, and especially Qatar, totally inexcusable decisions, which just HAD to be corrupt and bought, without any shadow of a doubt, were taken and no one really had any way to do anything about it.  Everyone I knew who heard about those decisions found them completely absurd.

It is almost like thinking there is anyone who thinks the invasion of Iraq was a success and worth every life and dollar.  Oh wait, there are such folks.

I wonder if Sepp will ever leave.

Hmm.
Russia is an entirely logical place to host a world cup, especially among countries that haven't had one before.
Don't let recent political hysteria cloud your judgement on that score.
Qatar was always utterly ridiculous.
I expect 2030 World Cup to take place on the moon.

A Nigerian friend of mine was defending Blatter when all this went down, essentially his argument was that Blatter for his faults has invested in African football which no one else has done.

I pointed out that the actual investment in Africa is relatively small, but it is clear that Blatter has worked out that a narrative of criticism of FIFA by Europe and the US as neo-colonialism, plays very well with his backers in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

McQuaid did much the same in the UCI

I believe that the old Soviet phrase was 'tailism'.

I am so happy hearing the news that Blatter has resigned. However, what I am concerned about is that he will stay on until they have an "extraordinary" (if that's the word) meeting to arrange a new election, this will take place anytime between December 2015 and March 2016, giving him plenty of time to destroy any evidence from computers etc (Although, if he was smart enough, there wouldn't be any evidence of corruption in the first place).

Can anyone remember if Brain Cookson "seized" all the UCI computers when he took over from Pat McQuaid?

seizing mcquaids computer was his first act

Within minutes of Pat McQuaid losing the UCI presidential election in Florence last month, his computer was seized as part of a pre-prepared operation put in place by his successor Brian Cookson and triggered immediately the Briton took office.

but leaving evidence on your own laptop is the corruption equivalent of taking a selfie in the house you're robbing

I've read a suggestion that Islamic State will put in a bid in an effort  to legitimise themselves. I'm sure FIFA would be willing if there was enough money involved. If Blatter could have hung on a bit longer he might have finally won the elusive Nobel peace prize for bringing peace to the Middle East through football Wink

So "Big Sam" turned out to be a greedy bast*rd, who would have thought  Wink

Don't think England deserve to perform well on the world stage as long as their fans are booing their own players for being selected. Can anyone imagine Wales fans booing one of their own players every time he gets the ball?
