|
|
Hi guys - I'm looking for some advice. The wife and I have a weeks holiday at the start of April, and we seriously need to go cycling somewhere with a reasonable chance of sunshine. We've done the Mallorca thing, and would like to try somewhere new. My rough criteria would be...
1. Reasonable chance of some sun!
2. Can hire some reasonable quality road bikes.
3. Easy to get to from the UK
I was thinking of Sardinia, but couldn't find much in the way of places hiring decent bikes. Corsica perhaps? I'm not really looking for one of those organised tours, and would rather base ourselves somewhere nice for the week. All suggestions appreciated!
Thanks
J

| I did Sardinia April last year - beautiful!! I went with Saddleskeddadle and took my bike. You can hire decent bikes there, but I'm not sure where exactly. |

Thanks for the feedback guys...
Bartali - I came across Saddleskeddadle website and it looked interesting, so it's good to know someone can vouch for them. I'd prefer to base myself in one place, rather than tour, so was there any town or region of Sardinia you thought was particularly nice for cycling?
Last KM - a couple of folk have mentioned the Canaries now, so I've started looking at it in detail. My concern was that the islands are quite small, and you would have to go around in circles. I assume you've cycled there, so was this your impression? |

| It's all nice - well all the west coast which is where I rode. Nice climbs, but nothing too mean like the Alps/Dolomites etc. North of centre it was very windy, which was a pain for a light(ish) rider like me on a 'flyaway' bike. I'll look on a map later but the cycling guides lived in the South and I think that's what they recommended. |

Only cycled in Majorca.....Club La Santa is out of my budget..popular with Germans, and yes its a windy island. _________________ Last km a.k.a "The Tewkesbury Badger"!!

| Thanks for the suggestions guys. I've opted for Sardinia, primarily because I can get cheap flights. We're going to stay in the South-East, which looks pretty and rural, so hopefully lots of empty roads. |

| The Algarve (South Portugal) is very nice now. Good Roads. I don't know about renting bikes there but why not invest in a bike luggage and take your own bike with you? |

We were in the North near Porec and mainly the beaches are solid rock. Still crystal clear sea, good food everywhere and not a bad coffee to be had...mind you weather could've been better! _________________ If you brake, you don't win |

Hi there,
Im just back from Gran Canaria. I didn't have the opportunity of cycling (I was there for some "injury recovery"), but I can guarantee you it is fantastic. Roads are almost perfect, and there are very good stretches uphill (and lots of cyclists around every day!). The island is not so small, so Im sure you will enjoy great rides without going in circles. they have good quality bikes (trek, cannondale, pinarello...) and the rent was about 15 euros per day. I am seriously thinking of booking something for the end of the summer myself.... |

| Thanks for the info Marco. Gran Canaria was definitly one of my favored options, but I couldn't get decent flights. More than happy to be gonig to Sardinia, but Gran Canaria is still near the top of the list! |

Went to Sos Alinos near Orosei in May two years ago with a group of cyclists, so we took our bikes. As you say beautiful and very little traffic.
Sometimes you can get some great deals on the ferries which makes taking your bike a good option. |
